Sunday, June 3, 2007 SCHOOL THE POST PAGE7 College Misericordia incorpo- rates service-learning projects into many of its courses. The projects engage students in the development of life-long civic responsibility through academ- ic coursework. Students gain knowledge, skills and commit- ment to make a significant im- pact in their communities. The combination of strong academ- ics, career development and community-service leadership fosters the development of citi- zens who will take active lead- ership roles. . Misericordia students active in several cam- ¢ pus volunteer organizations al- # so tutor these same students in reading, writing and arithmetic. “Service to community is a time-honored tradition at Mi- sericordia,” said Dr. Michael A. MacDowell, president of Col- lege Misericordia. “Nurtured by our founders and sponsors, the Sisters of Mercy, every Miser- icordia student, faculty and staff member understands that service to others is an expected & d honored part of their associ- ation with this institution.” Ey Campus Compact has con- +, ducted an annual membership survey since 1987. Its purpose is to assess the current state of campus-based community en- gagement and to identify emerging trends. It has shown a strong trend toward increased we. engagement among member in- 5. stitutions, as measured by ser- 7 vice opportunities, participa- ~ 7 tion in service-learning, com- munity partnerships, and re- sources and infrastructures to support service work. “Service learning is contin- Isericord uing to grow as a valued peda- gogy, and our member institu- tions are pioneers in the field,” said Maureen F. Curley, presi- dent of Campus Compact. “Sup- port for service learning and other engagement activities at the institutional level is at an all-time high and students are eagerly participating.” Misericordia provides several opportunities for students, fac- ulty and staff to participate in service-oriented projects. The Service Leadership Center, un- der the direction of Linda Ross, manages and coordinates ser- vice learning. In the 2005-06 academic year, Misericordia provided 32 service-learning courses and had 662 students participate an average of 9.4 hours per week. “Our students have been vol- unteering their time and talents for many years,” said Ross. “More than 41 percent of our students were actively involved in civic engagement activities. a volunteers reach out around the wor Jamaican children give Misericordia student Joelle Rhayem a new hairdo during the annual service- learning trip to Lionel Town, Jamaica in January 2007. It helps them develop as profes- sionals and as individuals while also helping the greater com- munity.” Misericordia’s students also have numerous civic opportuni- ties available through Campus Ministry under the direction of Rev. Michael Bryant. In the 2005-06 academic year, Campus Ministry students provided 1,508 service hours through 25 different programs, including the Adopt-A-Friend and Adopt- A-Grandparent programs, and service trips to Jamaica, Guya- na and Mississippi. Campus Compact is a nation- al coalition of more than 1,000 college and university presi- dents -representing about 6 mil- lion students - who are commit- ted to fulfilling the civic purpos- es of higher education. As the only national association dedi- cated to this mission, Campus Compact is a leader in building civic engagement into campus and academic life.
