The temperatures still might hover around freezing and a few inches of snow remain on the ground, but that isn’t stop- ping the spring sports teams at Lake-Leh- man and Dallas from getting ready for the upcoming season. The baseball and softball teams have been practicing inside for sever- al weeks. The girls soccer teams have also been conditioning, while the track and field athletes have been trying to find a clear spot in the school’s parking lot. The tennis teams have been clearing snow off the court to practice. Meanwhile, the boys volleyball teams are going through their practices without a weather-related care in the world. Some of the sports begin regular season competition in the Wyoming Valley Confer- ence this week, while most get under way the first week of April. SPORTS BRIEFS DYB 5th grade wins tournament Justin Brojakowski scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half to lead the Dallas Youth Basketball fifth grade team to a 50-33 win against Gate of Heaven in the championship game of the annual DYB tournament. Also competing in the round-robin format were the Dallas fourth grade and St. Als. Kyle Razawich led all scorers with 20 points, while Mariano Medico added eight points and Blake Williams chipped in four. Michael Boland scored seven points for Gate of Heaven. In other pool-play action, DYB fifth grade defeated the DYB fourth grade, 39-13, behind eight points from Chris Behm and four from Wil Akins. Spen- cer Bowanko led the fourth grade with five points and James Flores added two. The fifth grade team also defeated St. Al's, 58-12, as Kyle Razawich scored 22 points, followed by Matt Saba with eight and Nigel Stearns with two. The fourth grader defeated St. Al's, 24-20, behind seven points from Omar Nij- meh. Zach Connollr added four points and Brian Drouse chipped in two. Gate of Heaven defeated the fourth-graders, 49-14. Brian Banas led the Gators with 11 points. Jake Archer and Brendan Baloh scored three points each for the DYB squad. Dallas softball holding clinic The Dallas High School softball team will hold a clinic for girls ages 7-14 on Sunday, March 25 in the Dallas Middle School gymnasium. Instruction for offense and defense will be held from noon to 3 p.m., while instruction for pitchers and catchers will take place from 34 p.m. The clinic will be under the direction of Dallas head coach Joyce Tinner, a former standout at Dallas and Penn State University. The cost is $20 for the offense/defense clinic, $10 for the pitchers/ catchers clinic, or $25 for both. Participants should bring their own gloves and wear comfortable clothing. Sneakers are required on the gym floor. Food and sports drinks are prohibited, but water is allowed. For more informa- tion, call 696-0951.
