Second row: Hannah Madeira, Cathryn Warner, Laura Madeira, Sarah Francis, Peter Francis and Jesse Francis TREE Continued from Page 1 office gave each student a spe- cial “U.S. Postal Service” color- ing book and crayons. “These cookies look like San- ta’s star,” said Chris Chavira. Solemnly nodding, classmate Dillon Hakim added with an em- phatic “Yep, these are Santa’s cookies.” White read a letter addressed to the children from the North Pole and spread a blanket on the floor so the student could sit and eat their cookies. Sosik remind- ed them all that “Santa has a ve- ry direct connection to the post office” so their work takes on special importance. For her part, first-year kinder- garten teacher Jenny Gibbons thought the event was perfect. “It’s everything that Christ- mas should be,” she said, adding the children worked coopera- tively in teams to make their pa- per chains. They worked to see which team could make the “longest chain” and were “over- whelmingly excited” to decorate the tree, she said. Pat Norris, a student aide in the classroom, said for some children it was their first experi- ence on a school bus. The children were as cute as can be and they helped their community prepare for the holi- day season in a special and mea- ningful way. As the class left the post office, one of the students expressed a holiday sentiment: “Merry Christmas and be good,” he said. CHURCH Continued from Page 7 fellowship and a short devotion period. The breakfast, fellowship and devotion period last no longer than one hour. Men from all Back Mountain churches are encouraged to attend. For more information, call Bob Deeble at 696-2148. Has the controversy over Pluto piqued your interest in the solar system? The Fried- man Observatory at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman Township offers oppor- tunities to view the night sky through a computerized 16-inch Meade telescope. The observ- atory is open to the public start- ing one hour after sunset on clear Mondays. If Monday is not clear, the observatory will be open Tuesday at the same time. John Rovnak, acting director of the observatory, and her assistants will be on hand to answer questions. Rovnak is an amateur astronomer, retired aerospace engineer, and Penn State graduate. Small groups are welcome on public nights. Larger groups, such as Girl and Boy Scout troops, are invited to call for a private session. The Observatory opened in 1990 and the computerized Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain reflecting telescope is the only one of its kind in the region. The rural setting provides a perfect opportunity for star- gazing away from city lights. For more information regard- ing viewing opportunities, con- tact Thomas Winter at 675-9278 or txw2@psu.edu; and Rovnak at 925-2561 or jer32@psu.edu.
