PAGE 4 THE POST COMMUNITY Sunday, November 12, 2006 Essay contest offers prizes The Dallas American Legion Post 672 is holding its annual essay contest for high school students. The contest is held in con- junction with the 72nd annual contest sponsored by the Penn- sylvania American Legion. The contest is open to all students who reside in the Back Moun- tain. This year’s topic is “How Can We Support Our Troops?.” There are monetary awards at the local and district levels. Scholarship awards are present- ed to the three finalists in the final round of the state contest. The first place winner will receive a $3,500 scholarship, a plaque, and a trip to the Amer- ican Legion convention in July 2007 to read the winning essay to the assembled delegates. The second place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship and a plaque, while the third place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship and a plaque. Interested students may con- tact their school office or call Dallas American Legion com- mander Clarence J. Michael at 675-0488. All entries must be received by Jan. 7. The American Legion is also sponsoring a high school orator- ical contest. The theme for year’s contest is “We The Peo- ple.” The contest will consist of an 8-10-minute, memorized oration on some phase of the United States Constitution and a 3-5-minute extempore oration on one of four topics assigned by the national headquarters. The first place winner will receive a $7,500 scholarship, plaque, and a paid trip to the Pennsylvania American Legion State Convention to present the winning oration. The winner will also represent Pennsylvania in national and regional contests and receive an additional $1,500 scholarship from the national organization. The second place winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship and a plaque, while the third place winner receives a $4,000 schol- arship and a plaque. CIVIC BRIEFS Food pantry readies for Thanksgiving The Back Mountain Food Pantry will be closed from Now. 13-27 to prepare and distribute Thanksgiving dinner baskets. Registered clients have been provided with information regarding the distribution of the baskets. The pantry’s board of direc- tors thanks members of the community for holding food drives and making monetary donations to assist with the Thanksgiving dinners. The monetary gifts will be used to purchase turkeys and other supplies to supplement the baskets. The pantry, which is located at the Trucksville United Meth- odist Church, operates 12 months of the year. It relies on food drives and monetary gifts each month, not just during the holiday season. The pantry distributes almost 22 tons of food each year. Food items may also be dropped off at the church office. For hours, or more information, call 696- 3897. Penguins goalkeeper to speak at library The Back Mountain Memo- rial Library will host goaltender Andrew Penner of the Wilkes- Barre/Scranton Penguins at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21 in the Children’s Room. The library is located on Huntsville Road in Dallas. Penner’s visit is being made in conjunction with the recent “Get Active @ Your Library!” program. Penner will speak to youngsters, teenagers, and hockey fans about good sports- manship, conditioning, the responsibilities of being a team player, and the value of having a good work ethic in school and on a team. He will also answer questions and sign autographs. The Scarborough, Ontario native was signed as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Pen- guins last August. Cook's Pharmacy offering flu shots Cook’s Pharmacy will hold a flu shot clinic from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14; 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16; and 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at the store on Memorial Highway in Sha- vertown. The cost of the shot is $25. Last year, more than 120 people from throughout the Wyoming Valley area received their flu shot at the clinic. Cider Painters holding exhibit The Cider Painters of Amer- ica is holding its 22nd annual exhibit and sale of miniature paintings through Dec. 29 at The Waterlily, 103 E. Overbrook Road in Dallas. The exhibit will feature the paintings of many local and international artists. The Cider Painters of America was found- ed in Dallas in 1983. Leaf collection begins in Dallas Dallas Borough is holding its annual fall leaf collection pro- gram. The collection will con- tinue throughout the month of November or until the first significant snowfall. Borough officials ask residents comply with the following guidelines: e Leaves only (no grass clip- pings or other yard waste) should be raked to the curbside for vacuum collection. The vacuum equipment will not function properly if residents mix yard waste with the leaves. e Residents are asked to rake all leaves to the curbside in long thin rows approximately 3 feet wide. Placing the leaves curbside will facilitate collec- tion. Residents are cautioned not to place any items within the road right of way that may create potentially hazardous or unsafe conditions. ¢ Residents who prefer to collect leaves and place them in plastic bags may do so by plac- ing the bags curbside for pick- up. Temporary signals have been installed as construction begi on a permanent bridge replace- ment on Route 118 in Ross Township. The signals will alternate eastbound and west- bound traffic to use a single lane during construction, which began this week. Lights will be in flash mode for three to seven days before going into red, yellow, green activation.
