The Chicory House is an all-volunteer nonprofit coffee- house, sponsoring folk music and dance in the Wyoming Val- ley. Dancers are invited to bring a snack to share at intermission. Dancers must wear sneakers or flat/low heeled shoes with non-marking soles and heels. High heels are not allowed on the dance floor. Three-day powwow to benefit fire company Native Americans of the End- less Mountains will host a Fall- ing Leaves Friendship Powwow to benefit the Noxen Volunteer Fire Co. from Sept. 15-17 at the fire company’s grounds on Stull Road, Noxen. Gates will open at 10 a.m. all three days. Native American drumming, dancing, storytelling, crafts and food will be featured. Dancers and drum groups are welcome. The admission is $3 for ages 12 and older. There is no charge for members of the military, police and firefighters in uniform. The Sept. 15 powwow will be open to any handicapped groups, special classes or schools. The event is drug and alcohol free. Pets on a leash are wel- come but must be cleaned up after. For more information call 417-6028. Library to hold mini auction The Back Mountain Memorial Library will hold a mini-auction at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17 at the Dallas borough garage. The event is being held in conjunc- tion with the Dallas Harvest Festival. More than 200 new antiques, a variety of new goods, and nearly old items will be sold by auctioneer Steve Traver. The popular variety baskets will also be auctioned off. Civil War group meeting Sept. 14 The Wyoming Valley Civil War Round Table will open its 10th year with returning guest speaker Jim Pangburn at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Dallas American Legion on Route 415. Panburn’s program will feature the Gettys- burg Soldiers National Ceme- tery. The Gettysburg resident has been a licensed battlefield guide for the past seven years. There is no admission charge. Anyone interested in U.S. histo- ry is invited to attend. This is not a reenactment group, but an informative group for people interested in learning about the Civil War. Alzheimer's group sets monthly meeting The Alzheimer’s Support Group will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Mead- ows Nursing Center in Dallas. The facility is located at 55 W. Kiss the Pig contest accepting $1 votes The Dallas Harvest Festival Committee is holding its fourth annual “Kiss the Pig” contest during the Dallas Harvest Fes- tival. The festival will be held Sunday, Sept. 17 on Main Street. The chiefs of five Back Moun- tain volunteer fire departments are participating in the friendly “Kiss the Pig” competition. The contestants are Harry Vivian, Dallas; Jack Dodson, Kunkle; Dennis Bonning, Lehman Town- ship; Gary Beisel, Shavertown; and Bill Eck, Trucksville. Bright pink labeled ballot jars and posters are located at locations throughout the Back Mountain, specifically stores and busi- nesses along routes 309, 415, 118. Local residents may pur- chase as many $1 ballots as they wish through Sept. 17. Ballot jars will also be available during the festival. The identity of the winning “kisser” will be an- nounced at the festival district magistrate James Tupper, who will witness the kissing of “Roc- co Rooter,” a potbelly pig owned by 4-H educator Marge Bart of Dallas. Half of the money col- lected will be donated to the winning chief’s fire department, while the other half will be used to defray the cost of next year’s festival. Last year’s winner was state Sen. Charles Lemmond. Choral Society plans auditions The College Misericordia Choral Society will hold audi- tions for openings in all parts each Tuesday through Sept. 19. The Choral Society is one of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s premiere arts organizations. Its membership includes Miser- icordia students and faculty, and community members of all ages. The Choral Society welcomes new singers with music-reading ability and a dedication to sing- ing great choral music. Rehearsals are held from 7-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays in the Banks Student Life Center’s Kennedy Lounge. New singers may register for an audition by coming to any of the first four rehearsals, which began Aug. 29. Farmers Market open at library The annual Farmers Market at the Back Mountain Memorial Library is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday through Sept. 16 on the library grounds, Huntsville Road in Dallas. Among the features at the Farmers Market are locally- grown seasonal fruits and vege- tables, gourmet international cheeses, fresh baked goods and dairy ice cream. Local vendors include Brace’s Orchard, Dy- mond’s Farm Market and Bak- ery, I Gourmet, Creekside, Em- ma’s Bakery and the Lands at Hillside Farms. Vendor stalls will be set up on the pavement of the library parking lot. Patrons are asked to park on the lawn behind the library.
