Youth football teams Youth football teams in the Back Mountain got their seasons under way last weekend in the Wyoming Valley West Youth Football League. The King- ston Township Raiders posted a 3-1 re- cord, while the Dallas Junior Mounts won two games. No other scores were re- ported. Here’s a brief recap of last weekend’s games: A DIVISION The Kingston Township Raiders suf- ®- a 24-0 loss against Plymouth in the eason-opener. After allowing a Ply- mouth score on its initial possession, both defenses settled into a battle for field position until midway through the fourth quarter. Despite the loss, Jim Roccograndi, Matt Tatarnyw and John Doughterty each recorded at least one sack and made several tackles inside their own 5-yard line. B DIVISION Kingston Township Raiders B team de- feated Plymouth, 36-0, behind a stellar defensive effort and effective special teams which held Plymouth to less than 125 yards of offense and forced four turn- overs. Quincy Patrick scored three touch- downs, while Kris Roccograndi and Neil Shaver added a touchdown each. Jesse Shaffer scored three 2-point conversions for the Raiders. Defensive linemen Kyle Kotulski, Luke Edwards, JT Carey and Josh Weaver combined for four sacks and four tackles losses. Brian Vojtko, Joe Stier, Kevin laza- rowicz and Quincy Patrick each reco- @-- a fumble for the Raiders. Touchdowns were scored in the first quarter by quarterback Cole Dixon and quarterback/running back Mikey Shutlock. Ryan Monk, Jude Moran, Jackson Shaver, Jesse Kincer, Jimmy Barlow and David Simpson played well on the offensive line. In the third quarter, Cole Dixon scored again while Ryan Cheskiewicz and David Simpson each scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Matt Harrison, Kris Ro- sencrans, Justin Sweeney, Chad Phillips, Jack Tomko and Paulie Zablotney led the Dallas defense. ¢ Kingston Township Raiders C team defeated Plymouth, 12-6, behind the run- ning of Corey Patrick and the offensive line play of Tanner Gattuso, Brandon Wile and Ryan Martin. Patrick scored on 27- and 38-yard touchdown runs, one in each half of play. Defensively, Nick Math- ers, James Farrell and Ray Ostroski all added two sacks while holding Plymouth to under 100 yards of offense. D DIVISION The Dallas D team got off to a great start this season with a 22-0 win against Exeter. Justin Hutchins ran for a touch- down and threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Barber, who also ran for a touchdown later in the game. Ray Centanni added offensive strength with several strong runs, led by the block- ing of Gabe Bell, Drew Patton and Joe Thompson. The Dallas defense was led by Conner Phillip, Ryan Phillip, Mike Farrell, Jarrod Hislop, and Jare Polit-Mo- ran. Connor Phillip and Sterling Barnes each recovered a fumble. ¢ Ricky Morgan scored three touch- downs, including the game-winner with 30 seconds to play, as the Kingston Town- ship Raiders D team defeated the Ply- mouth Indians, 1812, in the opening game of the season. Morgan got the Raid- ers started with a 52-yard touchdown run to give the Raiders a 6-0. In the second half, Morgan added touchdown runs of 41 and 3 yards. Defensively, the Raiders were led by Ja- son Anderson who recorded three sacks and stopped a potential game-tying touchdown after a 44-yard Plymouth gain. Colin Pertl, Matt Mathers and Dal- ton Gattuso added .three tackles each while Nick Adams and Parker Voitek played well on the offensive line. Ld SPORTS BRIEFS Newberry ladies hold tournament The Newberry Ladies Golf League recently held its August out- ing at Mill Race Golf Club in Benton with a captain and crew tourna- ment, followed by a luncheon. Prizes were awarded to the winning team of Terry Cook, Mary Moran, Susan Berdis and Paula Birth. The honorable mention team of Joann Campbell, Alice Niskey, Joan Britt and Ursula Neyland also re- ceived prizes. The longest drive award went to Judy Schall and long- est putt award went to Diana Dreh- er. Chairpersons for the event were Janet Dent and Jane Jones. Dallas Rotary Club plans golf tourney The 23rd annual charity golf clas- sic sponsored by the Dallas Rotary Club to support Dallas Rotary Char- ities will be held Monday, Sept. 18 at the Irem Temple Country Club. The captain and crew event will be- gin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The club is also looking for look- ing for hole sponsors, according to chairman Kevin Smith. There were 80 hole sponsors at last year’s tour- nament and this year’s goal is 100. Hole sponsorships are available for $100.Each sponsor will receive a sign prominently displayed near a green or tee. Individual and team registrations are being accepted. The entry fee is $100 per person, which includes the greens fees, cart and a steak dinner. All proceeds will help charities such as the Back Mountain Library, the annual Christmas shopping spree for 45 underprivileged children, the Dallas and Lake-Lehman high school book scholarships and essay contests, the annual boys and girls leadership camps, the Luzerne County Fall Fair and the Back Mountain Food Pantry. Soccer boosters holding event The Dallas High School boys Soc- cer Booster Club will hold its an- nual “Meet The Team” night from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 at the high school soccer fields. Family members and friends are invited to attend. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. The monthly board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in front of the high school. WILLIAMS WINS TWO DIVING MEDALS YI Sweet Valley resident Brinley Williams, 10, recently won a silver medal in the I-meter springboard diving competition at the Keystone State Games at Messiah College in Grantham. She also won a bronze medal in 3-meter springboard. With the finishes, Williams qualifies for the State Games of America in Colorado. The daughter of Dave and Sue Williams is a member Mountaineer Diving team.
