PAGE 6 THE POST COMMUNITY Sunday, August 20, 2006 SCHOOL BRIEFS SAT review class begins Aug. 29 Penn State Wilkes-Barre, in cooperation with Cambridge Education Services, Inc., will hold a review class for the Scho- lastic Aptitude Test from 6-9 p.m. for seven weeks each Tues- day beginning Aug. 29 at the campus in Lehman Township. The course will cover prep- aration for the critical reading/ writing and math exams and will include a sample essay for the writing component. The "course is designed to provide information on the current format of the SAT and will pro- vide students with test-taking techniques. Topics will address increased reading comprehension and strategies for sentence comple- tion for the critical reading section. The writing component will cover grammar and me- chanics and effective essay writing. Students will be in- troduced to a math grid and learn when to use a calculator on the test. Instructors will also cover the advantages and disad- vantages of guessing. The cost of the class is $289 for critical reading and math or $149 one of the two subjects. Lake-Lehman school holding Open House The Lake-Lehman Junior/ Senior High School will host an Open House from Aug. 22-24 at the school on Old Route 115 in Lehman Township. The event will take place from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22; 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23; and 9-11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24. Students and parents are wel- come to attend any day of the Open House. The event gives seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students an opportunity to try lockers, locate rooms, and become famil- iar with the layout of the school. Information pertinent to the Open House will be mailed to the homes of each student. Students must bring the in- formation on the day they choose to visit the school. For more information, call the high school office at 675-7458. Wyoming Seminary ready for school year Wyoming Seminary will begin its 163rd year of classes at the end of the month. The Upper School in Kingston will register boarding and day students dur- ing the day on Sunday, Aug. 27 and Monday, Aug. 28 for grades 9-12 and postgraduate. New students will participate in orientation activities both days and freshmen will attend a spe- cial Freshman Retreat on Aug. 28. On Tuesday, Aug. 29, a spe- cial opening of school convoca- tion service will be held at the upper school. Senior class presi- dent Jacqueline Thomas of Dallas will ring the historic Cokesbury bell 16 times, one for each decade of Wyoming Semi- nary’s existence, to usher in the new academic year. The Lower School, located in Forty Fort, will begin its first day of classes Monday, Aug. 28 with a convocation for students in grades preschool through eighth grade. Orientation for new Lower School middle- school students will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21 and an Open House for new preschool, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students and their parents will be held from 1-3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25. A meeting for parents of pre- school, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 at the lower school. A similar session for parents of children in first through fourth grade will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 31. An orientation for middle school students and parents will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5. Parent-Teacher group set events at GOH The Gate of Heaven Parent Teacher Group will hold two back-to-school events for the 2006-07 school year. Family members of all registered stu- dents are invited to attend “Back to School Night” on Thursday, Sept. 7 at the school on Machell Avenue in Dallas. The time of the event will be announced at a later date. The event will begin with a PTG meeting, followed by class- room breakouts, introducing parents to their student’s class- room, homeroom teacher, and upcoming academic pursuits. Parents of all students — in- cluding those in the preschool, elementary and middle school —- are encouraged to attend. An ice cream social will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10 at the school. The event is open to current and prospective students and families. Teachers, staff and parents will be on hand to scoop ice cream and greet families. Children’s activities are also being planned. All parents of Gate of Heaven students, teachers and staff are automatically members of the Gate of Heaven PTG. Members interested in helping in the event planning are encouraged to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21 at the middle school. Parking will be avail- able at the Back Mountain Memorial Library with free shuttle service to the fes- tivities. The festival com- mittee is looking for vol- unteers to help with the event. Anyone interested is invited to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. Thurs- day, Aug. 17 at the bor- ough building. For the first time, the festival will host a chili contest. The event is open to 12 local restaurants and/or caterers. The cate- gories are normal, vegetar- ian, hottest, and unusual. The entry fee is $30 and prizes will be awarded. For a $5 fee, festival-goers can taste the chili and vote for their favorite. Half of the money raised from the contest will be donated to the Back Mountain Food Pantry. The Harvest Festival dance will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday, Sept. 15 at Irem Temple Country Club. Tickets are $25 tickets and may be purchased at Ochman’s Coin & Jewelry on Church Street in Dallas or at the borough municipal build- ing on Main Street. The ticket price includes food and free beer. A cash bar will also be available. Due to catering needs, no tick- ets will be available at the door. Most of the same ven- dors are returning from last year’s festival. A new feature this year will be the Harvest Festiv- al Idol Contest, which will be held at approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13 in Walsh Auditorium on the College Misericordia campus. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be limited to the first 75 musical performers be- tween the ages of 16-25. Solo and group acts are allowed, but no acting or poetry.
