Thurston | ge Bobby Baird to be featured at concert The Fine Arts Series of Shaver- town United Methodist Church will present “Songs for All Sea- sons” at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at the church, 163 N. Pioneer Ave- nue in Shavertown. The concert has become a favorite of many during the SUMC concert series. The concert will feature vocal and bell choirs from Shavertown United Methodist Church and several special guests, including Robert “Bobby” Baird. The longtime area trumpet player has delighted audiences for years. A three-time state champion trumpeter, Baird played in the United States Navy Band and has performed with Bobby Baird's Dixieland Jazz Band for more than 50 years. GLENWOOD PRODUCTS CHURCH BRIEFS Former death row inmate to speak The Social Justice Committee of St. Therese's Church in Shaver- town will hold the fourth in its Coffee and Conversation series at 7 p.m. Monday, May 1in the church hall. The church is locat- ed-on Pioneer Avenue in Sha- vertown. Jay Smith, a member of Witness to Innocence: From Death Row to Freedom, will be the speaker. + Smith was on death row for six years and is the only person who received a double-jeopardy decision in a capital case and was completely exonerated by a unanimous Pennsylvania Su- preme Court. Participants will receive back- ground materials from Smith, listen to his presentation and have an opportunity to ask questions on related matters such as the death penalty, death row, trial matters and post- exoneration difficulties. There is no admission charge and re- freshments will be served. Center Moreland UMC holding Day of Prayer The Center Moreland United Methodist Church will be host- ing a National Day of Prayer event Thursday, May 4th at the church on Creamery Road in Center Moreland. The special day of prayer will begin with quiet prayer at 6 a.m. for any- one wanting to pray before going to work.
