i | 1 ll i i i ; | Se —— PAGE8 THE POST SPORTS Sunday, February 26, 2006 EBY Continued from Page 7 ~ count the number of times he’s lost a div- ing match in the conference during the last four years on one hand. “There’s no one in our conference or dis- trict that can touch him,” said Dallas div- ing coach Kim Kuzma. “It’s like comparing apples and bananas. I've seen him grow im- mensely over the past three years. He's even a better diver than he was last year. He dives bigger and he dives harder. That’s not too bad for someone who be- gan diving at Moon Lake as an eighth-grad- er. Eby took the words of advice from a park lifeguard and began taking diving se- - riously, training with Rob Jacobs of the Fast Swim Club at Wyoming Valley West High School. He was a district champion less than 12 months later. “At first, I was just messing around try- ing to have fun and I didn’t win all of the time,” said Eby. “But once I started diving for the school (team), I started working harder and harder.” Among Eby’s most prestigious accom- plishments is his district championship during his sophomore year. At that meet, the Dallas senior broke the longtime re- cord of former Bishop Hoban diver Mike McGinley. Eby’s winning score of 482.60 points broke McGinley’s mark of 478.48 points set in 1975. It was the longest-stand- ing swimming or diving record in District 2. “It was definitely one of my highlights,” said Eby. “Breaking that record wasn’t a goal of mine. It never crossed by mind. It was shocked when my coach told me I broke the record.” Eby is trying — and accomplishing — dives far beyond the high school level. His inward 22 has a degree of difficulty of 3.1 and his reverse 2'% has a degree of difficul- ty of 3.0. Kuzma put those dives in perspec- tive. “There are only a handful of Division II college divers who can handle a reverse 2%,” she said. “Alaric has the potential to make 50 to 60 points in one dive. Most high school divers earn 25 to 35. The coach also sees her student having success on the collegiate level. “He has the drive,” said Kuzma, a former Clarion University standout. “Diving is 99 percent mental and one percent athleti- cism. If you have it in your head, you can do it. He’s going to be very successful in college.” For now, Eby is focused on states. “Im ready,” he said. “I'm looking for- ward to it.” PLAYOFFS Continued from Page 7 winners.
