K THEIR CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON FOR THE POST/CHARLOTTE BARTIZEK When the dust cleared the BMT Fireballs were the champions of the BMT girls softball, defeating the Tornados 18-0. In the semifinals, the Fireballs beat the Sliders, 12- 8 and the Tornados romped over the Rockets, 20-1. The Rockets won a play-in game, 16-3 over the Phoenix. BOYS MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP Rangers romp final game The Rangers broke a six-year National League stanglehold on the championship as they crushed the Astros in the finale, 12-0. Stephen Ruch pitched a complete game shutout, striking out eight and walking none. The Rangers scored six runs in the first with John McCarthy smashing a bases loaded double that plated three runs. The Rangers never looked back with Travis Debona, Brett Wanek, and Ruch each adding two hits. The Astros only hit came from Zack Yursha, and Brandt took the loss. Sarah Konopki pitched for the BMT Torn onship game. ados in a champi- Robbins 2nd in Duathlon WILKES-BARRE — Sean Robbins, 35, of Shavertown, finished second in the second annual Wilkes-Barre Duathlon on June 19, 32 seconds behind the winner, John Troy Owens, 26, of Nanticoke. The event — sponsored by the Wilkes- Barre YMCA and the Jewish Community Center of Wyoming Valley — featured a 3-mile run, a 16.9-mile bike and another 3-mile run. The event drew a field of 169 duathletes. Owens’ winning time was one hour, 15 minutes and 17 seconds. Owens had about a 45-second lead over Robbins at the first transition (end of the first run near the Market Street Bridge where the duathletes jump on their bikes and head towards Public Square and then onto the Hanover Industrial Estates Park). Robbins took over the lead early in the bike race. But Owens passed Robbins for good over a flat area of the industrial park some- where between the fifth and sixth mile of the bike course.
