Tue POST Sunday, May 29, 2005 7 SportsWeek Who's on first? It’s a girl, and she’s good By CHRIS BELL Post Correspondent As a member of the Harveys Lake Maroon Little League team, Selena Adamshick is showing that some girls can do anything boys can do. The 12-year-old daughter of Paul and Patti Adamshick intends to play softball at the junior high and high school levels, starting playing baseball after watching her older brothers, Mike and Shay, play. “I've been playing on boys’ teams since I started, so I thought I would finish on boys teams,” Selena said last week. She splits time between first base and pitcher. “I really enjoy the competition.” Her parents are proud of her accomplishments on the diamond. “She holds her own,” said Paul Adamshick, who added that Selena also competes against boys in ice hock- ey during the winter months. “Her best asset as a pitcher is her control. She gets it over the plate and doesn’t walk many people.” Thus far, the season highlight for Selena was the home run she hit in a win over the Back Mountain Giants. She added a double and a triple in that game and struck out seven batters over the final three innings to earn a save. “Hitting a home run was really exciting,” said Selena, a sixth-grade student at Lake-Noxen elementary. “But, my favorite part of playing is first base because there is a lot of action.” See SELENA, Page 8 GENDER EQUITY Selena Adamshick, 12, likes to play with the boys.
