He was a wealth of knowledge and I'm glad that we were able to pay tribute to him in this man- ner.” Sobocinski, a Dallas graduate, was always impressed by the knowledge and suc- cess Narkiewicz dis- played. “He always pulled something out of his bag of tricks,” said Sobocinski. “Even . when he didn’t have gq Narkiewicz the quantity, he always put a good product on the track. He made the most of his talent.” Another testament to “Coach Nark’s” abilities was the fact that he coached state champions in four differ- ent events. Mike Gennetts won a state title in the javelin in the 1970’s and Giro Hall won the state cross country title in 1982. Dave Janiczek claimed the 800m crown in the mid 1980’s and Brad Dieffenbacher won the high jump in 1997. ? : “He was a wealth of information,” said Sobocinski. “He knew all 18 events inside and out. He was out- standing in the throwing events and he was very good at making adjustments to an athlete’s technique.” The impact Narkiewicz made on the local track and cross country scene stretches beyond the Lake-Lehman boundaries. The Wyoming Valley Cross Country Coaches Association has named their league championship in his honor and College Misericordia hosted the second Annual Narkiewicz Invitational track and field meet last month. Following his retirement from Lake- Lehman, Narkiewicz spent three sea- sons as an assistant coach at Misericordia prior to his death in 2003. “Ed was a tremendous asset to our gq. program,” said Dr. Michael Mould, or) mer director of athletics at Misericordia. “We were a young pro- gram and had a young coaching staff when he came on board. He provided a steady influence.” “Coach Nark” stayed in touch with his Lake-Lehman family, sometimes bringing homemade pastries to the high school, said Barbara Cragle, long- time school secretary. Former Lake-Lehman athletic director Rich Gorgone, who coached with Narkiewicz for more than two decades, attended the dedication cer- emony. “It was beautiful ceremony, but it was bittersweet for me,” said Gorgone. “It was a very nice tribute for a classy guy.” (} CROSSWORD CORNER ERats SOMETHING'S APERBACK 3 Super Crosswi ord FISHY ERAT ERE RIE 0X: LW by Linda Thistle : : : ; B ACROSS 61 Submarine 108 Photo 5 Decorative 41 Pound 89 Birdsong of i MAA 30 | 1 Strike- finder 111 Fishy vase sound basketball each empty box in the diagram.
