POST Sunday, April 17, 2005 7 Sports ek Huntsville Golf Club ranks high in Pa., U.S. Huntsville Golf Club has been listed as one of the top-rated golf courses in Pennsylvania. In the May edition of Golf Digest, Huntsville was listed fifth in Pennsylvania in the best-in-state rankings for 2005-2006, up from eighth place in 2003- 2004. Golf Digest has conducted America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses rankings since 1966, making it the oldest and most respected ranking in the game. The maga- zine’s panel of 850 low-handicap male and female golfers nationwide played and rated the courses. The criteria used included shot value, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning, ambience and walkability. , In the March 11, 2005 issue of Golfweek’s Super News, Huntsville Golf Club was ranked at No. 85 in America’s Best Top 100 Modern Courses. Only one other Pennsylvania golf course is listed in the top 100. This is the ninth year in a row in which Huntsville has been listed in Golfweek’s top 100. Mark Covert serves against MMI. He won both his singles and doubles matches. A freshman, Covert has been playing tennis little more than a year, but has been a fre- quent winner for Dallas. FOR THE POST/ CHARLOTTE BARTIZEK Young Mounts making a name for themselves on the court By CHRIS BELL Post Correspondent The Dallas High School boys tennis team is enjoying a stellar season under second-year head coach Jim Cook. The Mounts had a 6-2 record after beat- ing MMI Prep April 13, their two losses coming at the hands of perennial league powerhouses Bishop Hafey and Wyoming Seminary. “We're off to a pretty good start,” said Cook, who also serves as the Director of Tennis at Newberry Estates. “We had a great match with Hafey that went right down to the wire. It would have been nice to win that match, but it was a great expe- heading into the final doubles match, which the Vikings won to secure a 4-3 vic- tory. : Against Wyoming Seminary, freshman Mark Covert was the lone winner for the Mounts in a 6-1 loss. “That was a great win for Mark,” said Cook, who is a USPTA teaching profes- sional. “He’s in his first year with the team and has only been playing the game for about a year. Dallas 13, GAR 12 Apr. 11 — Dallas overcame two GAR rallies with three home runs and some clutch plays. Gracjan Kraszewski, the second batter of the game, blasted a solo home run in the first, Dave - Harding belted a three-run homer in the third and Greg Harris added a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to give Dallas an 8-3 lead. GAR scored seven runs in the top of the sixth, but the Mountaineers countered with an RBI single from Eric Samanas, who earlier knocked in two runs with a first-inning single. Jonathan Baker then scored what turned out to be the winning run on a wild pitch in the Mountaineers’ five-run sixth. : Ryan Marascio, Mike Race, David Schultz and Joe Lambert each had two hits for Dallas. Lake-Lehman 11, Meyers 8 (6 innings) Apr. 7 — Lake-Lehman scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead, then the game was called because of rain. Kevin Racemus drove in three runs and teammate Matt Kapitula scored three times to lead Lehman. Wyoming Seminary 7, Dallas 2 (6 innings) Apr. 7 — Dylan Seeley hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and the Blue Knights went on to win a game shortened to six innings because of darkness. Seeley finished with three of Seminary’s five hits and scored twice. Mike Race had an RBI triple in the third for Dallas. Adam King pitched two innings of scoreless relief. SOFTBALL Berwick 3, Tunkhannock 2 Apr. 13 — Tunkhannock tied the game with two outs in the top of the seventh on a two-out, two- run double by Erica Wilbur. Mandy Fogel went 2-for-3 for the Tigers. Liz Henninger took the tough loss on the mound, scattering seven hits in 6 2/3 innings and striking out 10. Lake-Lehman 12, Hanover 2 Apr. 11 — Tara Whispell was 3- for-3 with a triple, Sheree Horvath went 2-for-3 with a double and Jill Chocallo went 2-for-4 with a dou- ble as Lake-Lehman pounded out 11 hits in a six-inning victory. Amanda Sagan also went 2-for-4. Sheree Horvath picked up the win on the mound for the Black Knights, tossing a three-hitter, striking out eight and walking just two. Wyoming Seminary 11, Bishop O'Reilly 1 Apr. 11 — Abby Sordoni went 3- for-4 with a homer, double and three RBI for the Blue Knights. Tunkhannock 5, Wyoming Area 2 Apr. 8 — April Schultz hit a home run, Kysta Lubinski tripled and Leah Wilsey had two hits for the Tigers, who scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Winning pitcher Mandy Fugel went the distance, allowing only one hit and striking out six. Nanticoke 2, Lake-Lehman 1 Apr. 7 — The Knights scored first, but Nanticoke won with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sheree Horvath took the Kim Kuzma at tough loss, while striking out five and not giving up a walk. Dallas 4, Meyers 3 Apr. 7 — With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Dallas’ Allie Evans singled, stole second, then attempted to steal third and came home on the errant throw for the winning run. Sara Swepston pitched all seven innings, striking out eight for the win. Lauren Collini smacked a triple for the Lady Mounts. GIRLS SOCCER Dallas 2, Bishop Hoban 1 Apr. 13 — Sophomore striker Megan McDonalds second-half score turned out to be the game- winner in a key victory over the Argents. The win kept Dallas undefeated in Division A. After a shaky start — Hoban struck early with a Sarah Rogers’ goal on a penalty kick in the ninth minute — Dallas bounced back 3:36 later when Sammie Elston set up Michelle Gibbons’ goal to knot the game at 1. Neither team could mount any serious threats the rest of the first half, but the Mountaineers came out strong in the second. They kept the ball on Hoban’s side of the field through most of the second half before McDonald broke her scoring slump in the 61st minute. Sophomore Kelci Gibbons lifted See ROUNDUP, Page 9 Burkhardt sets 2 records Staff report SELINSGROVE — Lake-Lehman senior Brandon Burkhardt set a meet record in the discus and javelin and also won the shot put on April 9 at the Susquehanna High School Classic. Burkhardt threw 158-7 3/4 in the discus and 195- 10 1/2 in the javelin to break the meet standards. He also threw the shot put 53-5 1/2 in winning the event by more than six inches. Placewinners from Lake-Lehman included Tina Watkins (100 hurdles, 4th, 17.32 and 300 hurdles, 3rd, 48.65), Jaime Lipski (400, 6th, 1:02.09) and Allison Boris (800, 6th, 2:29.94), Kim Chollak (high jump, 5th, 5-0), Rebekah Williams (high jump, 7th, 4- 10) and Annie Sorchik (javelin, 5th, 107-9). Griffiths, Wolfsberger take 3-miler WILKES-BARRE — Local runners took places four through seven in the River Street 3-Mile Run on April 10 at the Jewish Community Center in Wilkes-Barre. Amy Rome, 38, of Dallas, finished second among all female runners, finishing behind Heidi Wolfsberger, 25, of Moosic. Rome, who has dominated the female divisions of local races in recent years, was racing for the first time this season after a long layoff. Last June, the for- mer Penn State standout runner suffered an Achilles injury at the Harveys Lake Victory Run and didn’t begin training until this year. As Rome continues to improve, and with Wolfsberger running well, race fans can look forward to seeing some great match-ups between the two women later this season.
