Bishop O'Reilly 63, Wyoming Seminary 43 Dec. 18 — Tim Crossin and Josh Aciukewicz paced a 25- point second quarter as the Queensmen shook off an early challenge from Wyoming Seminary. Aciukewicz scored 14 of his 17 points in the quarter, while Crossin added eight of his game-high 20 points. The score was tied 11-11 after one quarter, but O'Reilly took a 36-20 lead into halftime. Staff report WILKES-BARRE — Matt Dragon won his third tourna- ment title to lead Lake-Lehman to a ninth-place team finish in the Times Leader Invitational Wrestling Tournament, held Dec. 17-18 at the Wachovia Arena. Dragon took the 152- pound class and teammate Andy Josuweit was runner-up at 145 pounds. Jeremy Schutz made it to the championship semifinal before losing 9-4 to eventual 140-pound champion Dave Zeek of Council Rock. John Hettes was the leading Dallas wrestler, finishing sec- ond at 130 pounds, in a match he had to withdraw from due to injury. Dragon dominated his class, winning the title with a 16-1 technical fall over John Sabatelli of Wyoming Seminary. He improved to 12-0 this season and 133-11 in his career. Gators nip Tunkhannock to capture championship Steven Ruch scored a game- high 16 points and Dan Kopicki added seven as the Gate of Heaven outscored Tunkhannock by 11 points in the second half to win the championship game of the Dallas Youth Basketball 6th Grade Holiday Boys Tournament 37-36. Mike Papi scored 15 points for Tunkhannock while Gavin Colley added 8 points. Tunkhannock reached the final by edging Dallas 35-31. Tunkhannock dominated the first half of the game, but Dallas outscored the Tigers 13-0 in the third quarter to take a nine point lead. The Tigers dominat- ed Dallas in the fourth quarter behind Kyle Custer’s 10 points. Custer finished with a game- high 19 points. Dallas was led by Marc Noyalis with seven points and Hayden Jenkins with six. Dustin Siperko was the leading rebounder. In the semis, Dallas edged St. Nick’s 48-38 behind Travis DeBona’s 18 points. Stephen Zapoticky and Spencer Youngman added six points each while Kevin Gilbert had four and Drew Schaub two. The Gators opened with a 44- 26 win over Valley West. John Dougherty was great in See DYB, pg 8 Pitching, hitting clinic Monday Flossy Finn’s Dug Out, a softball and baseball training center in Shavertown, will hold a clinic on Monday, December 27 for chil- dren between ages 9-18. Special guest Denise Davis, owner of Planet Fastpitch in Massachusetts, will be on hand to teach the basics of pitching and hitting. Davis, a former softball player at Lake-Lehman High School and Rutgers University, coached at the University of Rhode Island and was a pitching consultant at Boston University and Bridgewater State College. The beginner’s session is from 9-11 a.m. and the advanced ses- sion is from 10-12 p.m. Anyone interested is attending the clinic, can just show up on Monday with his or her glove. Each session is $40. The center is located on the corner of E. Center St. and Main St., next to Mary’s Flower Garden. |
