8 The Dallas Post SCHOOL Sunday, November 21, 2004 * Goodies to Iraq from GOH The Gate of Heaven Student Council recently led a school- wide collection of items to be sent to soldiers in the 109th Field Artillery serving in Iraq. “We felt we needed to help the soldiers who were giving us our freedom,” said council president Patrick DeRojas, an eighth grad- er whose father has served in the Medical Corps in Iraq. The students collected Slim Jims, beef jerky, licorice, and boxed drinks. “We figured we would ask for things that would- n't melt and that most people like,” said Peter Kaminski, first vice president. The school also ~ collected playing cards and monetary donations. Student Council members made posters about the collec- tion to hang in each classroom. “We didn’t expect to get so much,” said Emily Griswold, treasurer. “We didn’t know that so many people would feel the same way we do.” Each student in the school participated by writing short notes to the soldiers, which will be included in the shipment. “The boxes of collected items will be shipped free of charge by Fed Ex ground,” said Mary Jane Kozick, Student Council coordi- nator.
