Peter Crynes St. Therese’s Catholic Church The new school year; an opportunity to grow The last week before school begins after what has seemed like a quick and quiet summer season. The summer weather has seemed less than opti- mal, while the time seemed to have moved very quickly. The aging process in in gear for all of us. I am experiencing the passing of time as I remem- ber all my elders spoke of the past, while children think the time moves too rapidly because it means the end of a summer and a return to the class- room. This last week for all of us is a very sacred time. For each of us it might be the time to remember and rejoice with the memories of this summer of ‘04. For parents, it is a time to prepare children and young people for the experience of schooling. Like the first of January or the beginning of a new sports season, the beginning of a new year of schooling and education is a time for new resolves and new directions. It is a wonderful time to as- sess and clarify the gifts with which we have been blessed. It becomes a time to look forward with anticipa- tion to those subjects and areas of interest which have been the joy or our learning thus far. To re- turn to “familiar subjects” which have been com- fortable and relatively easy to comprehend and learn is a solid and secure base upon which to launch new ventures into areas of learning that have not proven so easy and comprehensible in the past. The beginning of this new year also is a moment to establish a new attitide about an area of learning which has been elusive in the past. The new direction the course takes, the approach and attitude of a new teacher, the realization that this subject has some significance and importance in the grand scheme of things — all this has the po- tential for reviving and re-enlivening a part of life which has been tiring and dreary. All of life is about learning, and all of learning is about improving our relationships, improving the manner in which we interact and relate with one another sharing our gifts and improving the world in which we live. The world of the student is the world of the school community; how we live each day with respect and reverence for the gifts and abilities of others as well as for the experience and learning of those who are sent to educate us and how we accept and develop our own gifts and abil- ities in the midst of this community will deter- mine what type of person and citizen we will be in the future. Let us remember that the word educate comes from the Latin word, “educare,” which means liter- ally to “lead out of, to educe,” which implies that all of our gifts and abilities live within us under the surface of our outside appearance. Therefore, the gift of this year will be the ability to bring forth, to lead out from within ourself all those tal- ents and gifts that are sometimes buried too deep within our unwillingness to grow and develop into the gifted persons we are.
