Bishop Hoban junior Melissa Supczenski finished fourth with a score of 286.15. “They have worked so hard all year long for this,” Dallas diving coach Kim Perez said. “They made awesome changes during the season. They lis- tened. They wanted to get bet- ter.” Eby had a strong first dive and was sensational over the fi- nal 10. “I knew I was going to have my highest score ever,” Eby said. “I came into this thinking ‘I'm trying to break 400.’ I had no idea I was close to 478.” Eby broke 400 in 10 dives, and had a score of 429 heading into his last attempt. He scored 7s and 8s, giving him the record in dramatic fashion. “I hope I can have a day like this at states,” Eby said. If he does, there’s a good chance that Eby, who finished 14th at states last year, will wear gold this year. The last person to make a se- rious run at McGinley’s record Bishop Hoban’s Brian Ginocchetti, who scored 476.05 at the 1995 District 2 Class 2A diving championships. Ginoc- chetti went on to win the state title in diving, with McGinley serving as Hoban’s “diving coach at the time. “This is my first year as div- ing coach and I haven’t been to a state meet, so I really don’t know what the competition is like there,” Perez said. “We're going to go down and hope to keep doing what we've been do- ing.” This article appeared in orig- inal form in the Times Leader.
