Game note LUZERNE COUNTY - (WCO Gerald L. Kapral, Dallas): Jim Haines called from the Wyoming Valley Beagle Club, reporting that he had two large bucks with their antlers locked roaming the property, and asking if there was anything we could do to help them. I responded, but advised Jim that it was possible that one of the bucks may have to die. With a deep snow on the ground, we decided to try to run the deer down to tire them out, and then do what we could to free them. Not so. After 45 minutes of relentless pursuit, the deer kept running uphill, downhill, thru multiflora thickets, and over ledges, showing no sign of slowing down. With darkness rapidly setting in, I'd had enough. Time for Plan B. I managed to sneak ahead of the bucks, and was able to get close enough to dispatch the nine pointer (it’s left eye was gouged out). With the ten pointer now having to drag its lifeless combatant thru the woods, he quickly tired, allowing me to keep him sub- dued while Jim sawed the antlers off the nine pointer. Once free, the ten pointer sprang away, leaving Jim and I to finally catch our breath, and to wonder why these two large bucks were locked in combat on January 28.
