10 The Post SCHOOL Sunday, January 11, 2004 Practice SAT test at Dallas The Dallas High School Guidance Department, in conjunction with the Princeton Review, will offer a practice SAT at Dallas High School on Satur- day, Feb. 14. The test will be given be- ginning at 8 a.m. Students should ar- rive no later than 7:45 a.m. The test is open to all area college bound students. Each student will re- ceive a detailed printout of their strengths and weaknesses to help pre- pare them for the actual SAT. There is a $25 charge. Checks should be made payable to Dallas High School and mailed to: Dallas High School Guidance Department, P.O. Box 2000, Dallas PA 18612. Financial aid workshop at Misericordia College Misericordia will host a Fi- nancial Aid Workshop for high school students and their families on Satur- day, January 17, from 10:30 a.m. until noon in the Kennedy Lounge of the Banks Student Center on the CM campus. Lunch and a campus tour will also be provided following the workshop. The program is designed to help parents and prospective college stu- dents understand the sometimes com- plex financial aid process involved in selecting a college. CM financial aid experts will present an overview of the different types of financial aid and the application processes involved. The workshop is offered at no charge and reservations are required. Medical admission test workshop at King’s The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) Preparation Workshop to be presented by King’s College on January 21, 22, 24 and 25 provides a thorough orientation to the MCAT. The workshop includes techniques for approaching all three types of questions: verbal reasoning, physical sciences, and biological sciences. The MCAT workshop at King’s College consists of four sessions: evening sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 21 and 22, from 6-9 p.m.; and weekend sessions on Satur- day and Sunday, Jan. 24 and 25, from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The cost for the workshop is $300 per student. Cheerleaders strut in London Danielle Evans, Marissa Mahle and Julianna Malcolm, juniors from the Lake-Lehman High School, left for London, England the day after Christmas to prepare for the 2004 Varsity Spirit New Year's Day Parade. This past June the girls attended Pine Forrest Camp in Greenley, PA for cheerleading. The tried out for camp All-Stars and when notified that they made it, were awarded medals and received invitations to London. DMS slates physicals The Dallas Middle School nurse’s office announces that the sixth grade physi- cals will be given to all students on January 15, 2004, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Parents are welcome to be present. Parents who choose to have the examina- tion done by their personal physician must submit the physical report to the nurse by January 5, 2004. Spring sports physicals will be held on February 5 and February 12 at 8:30 a.m. Parent permission forms are available in the school office and must be completed and returned to the nurse prior to the examination. Any student who plans to play baseball, softball, or track and field in the spring is required to have a physical before attending the first day of practice. Dallas Middle collects record donations Dallas Middle School brought in record donations in during its recent food drive. Nearly 6,800 items and $900 were collected. Grade 4-5 scholarship exam at Wyoming Sem Lower School Area fourth- and fifth-graders not al- ready enrolled at Wyoming Seminary Lower School may register for Sem’s fifth annual Fifth- and Sixth-Grade Scholarship Exam, to be held Satur- day, January 17 at the school’s Forty Fort campus. Up to four $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to students who display outstanding performance on the com- petitive exam and written essay. The competition is an opportunity to earn a scholarship at the Lower School and take advantage of its state-of-the-art facility. Need-based financial aid is also available beyond the award. Exam registration will be at 8 a.m. and the exam will be given at 8:30 a.m., ending at 11 a.m. Parents are in- vited to stay for an information ses- sion, a school tour, informal meetings with middle-school teachers and re- freshments. Another classroom visita- tion session for both parents and stu- dents will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. College Misericordia offers training for literacy, ESL tutors® The Service Leadership Center at College Misericordia and Tutors of Literacy in the Commonwealth invite the public to attend a series of tutor training workshops to learn how to be- come a tutor of adult literacy and Eng- lish as a Second Language. The work- shops will be held on January 20 and 22 and February 3 and 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the McGowan Room of the Mary Kintz Bevevino Library on the College Misericordia campus. The workshops are presented free of charge. Twelve Act 48 hours are avail- able to certified educators who com- plete the 12-hour workshop. The workshop series prepares vol- unteer tutors with skills and informa- tion for tutoring adults in the four ba- sic areas of communication: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Tu- tors will also learn strategies to use when working with adult learners whose primary language is one otter than English. The. Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany attracts over 5 million visitors each year because of its food and entertainment. Students prepared such German desserts as Schwarzwalderkirchtorte, German Chocolate Cake, and Apfel Kuchen for club members to sample. Other students created en- tertaining displays and amusing games to play.
