12 Tue POST Sunday, October 12, 2003 » § Church & Community PASTOR'S CORNER By Pastor Dennis Madeira New Life Community Church ‘Can‘who’ fix ‘what?’ Recent newspaper editorials and editorial car- toons have been raising the question as to whether our current President can fix the economic prob- lems that many Americans are supposed to be fac- ing. There is no doubt that there are those of us who have less to live on then others, but then most of us Americans have more to live on then many in other countries. So “poor” and “rich” can become relative terms affected by many different circum- stances. Our history as a nation reveals many periods of time when our citizens faced economic problems. During those times the Presidents of the United States have been from both political parties. Could it be that we are looking in the wrong place to have our economic problems fixed? Is it possible to fix economic problems to everybody’s liking, or to anybody’s liking, or is it the normal economic flow that occurs in everybody’s lifetime? Who is it that guarantees we will have economic success and never be “needy” or “poor? How much is “enough”? These are questions all of us deal with from time to time as we balance our checkbooks and work to insure our family’s needs. Benjamin Franklin said, “Money never made a man happy yet, nor will it. There is nothing in its na- ture to produce happiness. The more a man has, the more he wants. Instead of its filling a vacuum, it makes one. If it satisfies one want, it doubles and triples that want another way.” Too much consuming, or not enough money — what is the answer? Jesus said, “Beware! Don’t always be wishing for what you don’t have. For real life and real living are not related to how rich we are” (The Living Bible). All of us could take some instruction from that insight. As you read this I'm sure you can think back to times in your own life when a little more money or a little less debt would have been very helpful. Most of us in our lifetimes will move back and forth from having enough money to need- ing a little bit more. It would be nice if any President or political party could solve our economic woes, but from centuries of history we ought to know that “things” procured by money cannot guarantee life or the ab- sence of problems. The words of Jesus reach deep into all of us. “Real life and real living” is what Jesus is all about. It is accomplished every day in the lives of people who entrust their lives to Him in faith, whether or not they are “rich’ or “poor.” Pastor’s Corner is a weekly feature that ro- tates among leaders of Back Mountain churches.
