June 28 that had struggled in the regu- Baseball lar season. That was when league officials decided to cancel the final Saturday of the season and let every team have a chance to become the 2003 champion. Then it rained again, and washed away the hopes of all but the top four teams in each division, who began playoff action Tuesday night. “Until last week we weren't too bad,” said Jack Snyder, President of Back Mountain Baseball. He and other offi- cials had decided at that.time to let every team play for the championship, since none had been able to make up all their rained out regular-season games. But last Saturday’s deluge made it impossible to squeeze in enough playoff rounds to crown a champion before the start of all- star play. As a result, only the top four teams in the American and National divisions were included in games that started Tuesday. In the American League, the Yankees, A’s, Red Sox and Orioles made the cut, while the National League playoff teams were the Phillies, Dodgers, Giants and Astros. On Tuesday night, the Yankees defeated the Orioles 7-6 to ad- vance to the American League championship game. On the National League side, the Phillies nipped the Astros 2-1 and the Giants beat the Dodgers 7-6 Tuesday. The A’s defeated the Red Sox 8-3 Wednesday to move to the American League championship game, which followed immediate- ly. Derek Martin pitched a complete game for the win. The Yankees held on to beat the A’s 9-8 for the championship. The Yanks were up 9-3 in the fifth when Martin hit a grand slam to See PLAYOFFS, pg 12 2 p.m. - Exeter at BMT American 4 p.m. - Jenkins Twp. at BMT National Winner plays second round game Sun., June 29, 6 p.m. Softball 6 p.m. - BMT at Duryea Winner plays second round game Sunday at 6 p.m. 9-10 Softball 4 p.m. - BMT vs. Avoca/Dupont at Mountain Top Tues. Kip Hoffman, Watsontown, led a field of 408 runners and oke the tape in 43 minutes d 10 seconds to claim the men’s and overall titles. Rome, a 36-year-old from Dal- las and former Penn State standout runner, already is held in high regard locally with many wins during the past few years. Rome crossed the finish line in 49:34, easily outdistancing second-place finisher Emily Bil- bow, 23, of Wilkes-Barre, by 4 1/2 minutes. “It was a good day for a run,” Rome said. “I had a couple of slow miles in the middle of the race. I was just trying to keep an even pace because I wasn’t being challenged. And we beat the rain!” Shortly after Rome complet- ed the course, the rain began to fall and continued steadily while the rest of the field made its way to the finish line.
