The Dallas Post Dallas, PA February 6, 2003 THE DALLAS POST Section 2 Knights win duals title Staff report Lake-Lehman won its third District 2 Class 2A duals title by beating Hanover Area for the second time this season, 47-25, overcoming a 19-0 Hawkeye start by winning eight con- secutive bouts, including four pins. On Tuesday, the Black Knights (17- slammed Octorara 44-18 to move into the state quarterfinals. They will meet District 7 champion Mount Pleasant (17-1) Friday at the Giant Center in Hershey. The District 2 final started at the worst possible weight (171) for Lehman. So when Hanover Area built an early lead — like the 28-6 advan- tage it built during their previous meeting — the Black Knights weren't too concerned. They had come back to win that one, 44-28. After four straight losses, Lehman went about the business of defending its title. Pins by Jerry Mikielski at 103, Kel- by Morgan at 112 and John Houssock at 119 drew the Black Knights to within 19-18. Forfeit wins by Jon Schutz (125) and Matt Dragon (135) sandwiched around an Andy Josuweit decision at 130 put Lehman up com- fortably, 33-19. “We're extremely tough in the first seven weight classes,” said Lehman coach Phil Lipski, whose team pasted Western Wayne 54-16 in the semifi- nals. The Mountaineers hit two key three-pointers just after Nanti- coke took its only lead of the second half. Starter Meredith Lacy nailed a three-pointer from the left and reserve Cory Patton drained one from the right for a six-point Dallas lead that Nanti- coke would eventually catch briefly, but never overcome. Jackie Hardwick led Dallas with 17 points, and Lacey hit for 11 and Patton scored 10. Both Lacey and Patton had two 3- point shots. The team fin- ished the year with a 18-3-1 record. The Raiders won the Back Mountain U-12 playoffs by defeating the Chiefs in an exciting victory in a sudden death shoot- out. The Raiders capped their season by winning the U-12 Boys County Cup Tournament. They defeated the Wilkes-Barre Skyhawks 2-1 in the finals. The highlights of the event were the presentation of the Joe Hoinski Memorial Awards for Excellence in Athletics and the Student Athlete Awards. The Hoinski Awards were giv- en in four categories. Penn State soccer star David Walters, a Lake-Lehman graduate, won the Joe Hoinski Memorial Award for Excellence in Athletics in the open male division. Eric Feinstein, a soccer, bas- ketball and tennis standout at Wyoming Seminary, took home the Student Athlete award in the male division. The awards were open to ama- teur athletes who resided within school districts that are mem- bers of the Wyoming Valley Con- ference. The Student Athlete Awards were open only to high school seniors. The club accepted nomina- tions from the public for the awards, and a selection commit- tee picked ‘eight semifinalists, three finalists and the winner in each category. Walters, a Lake-Lehman grad- uate, had a stellar freshman season for the Penn State soccer team. He assisted on three game-winning goals for the Nit- tany Lions, who finished 16-8 and reached the NCAA Division I national quarterfinals. Walters was named second-team Big Ten and is touted as a potential All- American. Feinstein has a 4.26 weighted grade-point average, which in- cludes taking advanced place- ment courses at Wyoming Semi- nary, and scored 1,520 on his SAT. He has been a member of five District 2 championship teams for the Blue Knights (two in soccer, three in tennis) and was on Seminary’s state cham- pionship tennis team in 2001. Lisa Wasser, a three-sport star at Lake-Lehman, was a finalist in the Hoinski Scholastic female division. ‘ Megan DeCesaris of Lake- Lehman was a finalist in the Student Athlete female division. Anna Lloyd named to 3rd straight America East Academic Honor Roll Anna Lloyd, Dallas, a graduate of Wyoming Seminary and a ju- nior on the University of Ver- mont cross-country and track and field teams, has been named to the America East Aca- demic Honor Roll for the third consecutive year. Lloyd posted a 3.33 grade- point average Agricultural & Re- source Entrepreneurship during the fall 2002 semester while also competing on the women’s cross country team. She has a cumu- lative GPA of 3.14. The America East Conference honors student-athletes in its nine member schools for acade- mic excellence. Student-athletes who compile a grade-point aver- age of 3.00 or higher during their semester of competition are named to the America East Aca- demic Honor Roll. Lloyd finished 66th at the America East Championship meet in Boston, and was fourth in Vermont's dual-meet win over Saint Michael's College, running the five-kilometer course in 19:39 to help the Catamounts to victory. Lloyd also is a distance runner on the indoor and outdoor track and field teams and is involved with the UVM Equestrian Team at UVM. The team promotes an interest in horsemanship for all students, and provides an op- portunity to compete against other colleges as well as ride weekly. Lloyd is an officer in the popular student-run organiza- tion. Anna is the daughter of John and Elizabeth Lloyd of Dallas. She was a three-sport standout at Wyoming Seminary, compet- ing in field hockey, soccer and cross country. In addition, she was ranked in the top 10 nation- ally in equestrian riding in 2000.
