Mounts hold off Hoban e@ | star almost long eit | By JAMIE PIERCE For The Dallas Post DALLAS — Dallas had an an- swer for Meredith Alexis for the first three quarters of Monday night's Wyoming Valley Confer- ence Division II battle of second- half unbeatens. Although the 6 2” center had her way around the basket for most of the game, Dallas fought by junior Jackie Hardwick. vi But when the fourth quarter — rolled around, Alexis's inside presence took its toll. The senior scored 11 of her game-high 33 points in the final period, includ- ing nine in a row to open the quarter, and Hoban escaped Dal- las with a 51-46 victory. : The Argents moved to 6-0 in the second half and 14-0 in the conference this season. Dallas slipped to 5-1, a game in back of the Argents with two to go in sec- ond-half play. “She (Alexis) is great under- neath the basket,” Dallas coach Joe Noon said. “They pushed us down underneath in the fourth quarter and she is tough to stop down there.” The fifth lead change of the second half came on Alexis’s nities. She scored 10 points dur: ing Hoban’s 14-0 run and the Ar; gents led 16-8 with 5:40 left in the first half. \ Cory Patton's three-pointer with 4:58 left in the second quar- ter broke Dallas's stretch of 10 consecutive misses from behind the arc. The Mountaineers th buckled down defensively put together a 9-0 run of their own to close the half. Hardwick scored seven of those nine — in- cluding five consecutive free throws — and Dallas pulled with- in 23-22 at the half. : The teams traded buckets for most of the third. Patton's second three-pointer gave Dallas a 34-31 lead, its first since the 2:14 mark in the first quarter, and its last of the game. Alexis then netted a putback to pull Hoban within one at the end of the third, setting the stage for her brilliant fourth-quarter pert formance. “I told the girls we played four good quarters of basketball and they have nothing to be ashamed of,” Noon said. “We lost to a very good team tonight.” Hardwick led Dallas with 20 points, including 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Junior Shannon Thomas had 11 points and four steals, while Rosalyn Wentko and Patton scored six points each. Alexis added seven more in the fourth quarter before Dallas got on the board and the Argents never trailed again. Dallas started quickly. With the help of three quick Argent turnovers and a couple of full- court layups from Hardwick, the Mountaineers took an 8-0 lead with 4:39 left in the first. (CT I Yo I i | LUZERNE COUNTY — (WES Joseph Wenzel, Dallas): It was a cold, frosty star-lit night just before Christmas as veteran Deputy Rich Walton sat vigil over one lonely deer near his home. It was now 3:30 a.m., and nearly an hour passed since “poachers” picked up and ran in an unidentified vehicle after “taking” a deer from the same location. Rich's many years of experience led him to believe that they would return for the remaining deer. Unfortunately, as is the case many times, the poachers didn’t return that night. I sup- pose I should mention that the deer Rich was “sitting on” was one of his Christmas decorations in his front yard. I didn’t have the heart to ask Rich if the culprits tagged it, or sent in a harvest report card. Sorry Rich, I couldn't resist.
