Christmas Eve ‘lighting of the luminaries’ The Back Mountain Catholic Youth Council and the Shavertown Fire Department invite residents of the Back Mountain Community to join together on Christmas Eve in a “Lighting of the Luminaries” and a Prayer for World Peace. The tradition of lighting luminaries in front of homes and along driveways (votive candles placed in a small bag anchored with sand) goes back two thousand years ago, when shepherds marked the way to the manger of the Christ Child with small bonfires. The Shavertown Fire Department and the youth council members are selling luminary packets (in- cludes 12 votive candles, 12 small bags, packet of sand & World Prayer for Peace) on the two weekends before Christmas. Packets cost $6 each, or 2 for $10. Shavertown Fire Department will be selling in _ front of Thomas’ Family Market, Shavertown.
