CROSSWORD CORNER Boys preview (continued from page 11) be around for several years and believes that building a solid foundation will be the key to success in the short and long term. Lake-Lehman will play its first game on Saturday at Wyoming Seminary. “We'll be trying to get things to- gether,” says the coach. “Working out some kinks, see- ing what works real game time and what doesn't.” “We're in a very competitive and comprehensive league,” Zelinske explains. “We play triple and quad A schools. It'll be a tough season. Every game will be a war and a battle.” Coach Zelinske knows it will be a challenge. He con- cludes, “It won't be easy but if we play together we should come away with some wins. I'm really excited about it.” Dallas is nearly all new On the other side of the proverbial coin of the Back Mountain, there is Dallas. Coach Pat McCue of the Mountaineers basketball team isn't new to the team this year, but his players are. Last May, 10 seniors graduated and left the team. This season, McCue has only one returning player: Paul McCue. Paul is a senior and the team captain. “They ‘re a good group to be around and 1 they work hard. Pat McCue * Dallas coach “Paul has a lot of experience,” “He's played at this level before.” With several seasons, playoffs and championship games under his belt, Paul knows what to expect. “His maturity level really makes him a great leader.” This is Coach McCue’s sixth season with the Mounts, who finished 17-10 last yea, losing to Scranton Prep in the district semi-finals and to Crestwood in the state tournament. Aside from the captain, every other player on the team is brand new or has played only junior varsity. “There’s a big difference between varsity and junior var- sity,” says the coach. “There’s a lot of learning and growing happening now.” The team has already had two scrimmages. Coach McCue says his team played really well in one and not so well in the other. McCue believes Crestwood will be a tough competitor, as well as Nanticoke. “In fact,” he says, “our whole divi- sion will be tough. Most teams we’ll be playing have a lot of returning players and we don’t have any. Our ex- hibition schedule is really tough. We have constant travel, hardly a day off and just continuous playing.” There isn’t one game McCue really thinks he can pre- maturely count as a win. “Nobody will be easy.” coach McCue thinks the greatest asset his team has is that the players are really close. “These kids hang out together,” he says. “They go to dances, have fun together and know each other real well. They're real tight and that’s important. They're a good group to be around and they work hard.” says coach McCue. Tell our advertisers you saw them in The Dallas Post. They'll appreciate it, and so will we. 5-6 boys (continued from page 9) the Dough Company, followed by Andrew McCabe 6 points and Jonathan Orlando with 5 points. Deer hunt at Frances Slocum State Park The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) will conduct a regulated deer hunt at Frances Slocum State Park, Luzerne County, Monday, December 9, to help control the deer population within the park. The one-day hunt is for whitetail deer only, and will be conducted in areas not normally open to hunting. To ensure the safety of all park visitors, the park will be closed to all other activities this day. To participate, hunters must hold an unfilled Luzerne county antlerless license. Only manually operated shotguns 20 gauge or larger, or muzzleloading firearms will be allowed. The hunt will be limited to the first 40 hunters that arrive at the park starting at 6 a.m., and will not be chosen by lottery drawing. All hunters entering the park will be checked to ensure they have a valid unfilled Luzerne county antlerless license and appropriate firearm, and be asked to fill out a registration and safety orientation form before being as- signed a designated parking area. “When the deer population is out of balance with the park land, it affects other wildlife, including the elimination of plant species and destruction of habitats for birds and small mammals,” said Roger Fickes, director of the Bureau of State Parks. Fickes explained that the excessive deer herd is destroying park vegetation and needs to be controlled on a yearly basis. He said that after hunts at other state parks, the park staff usually sees a return of long absent wild- flowers, shrubs, and small trees. Safety zones, no hunting areas, and park boundaries will be post- ed and strictly enforced. Extra park rangers and Pennsylvania Game Commission personnel will be stationed throughout the park area during this hunt. For more information about the regulated hunt, call the park of- fice at 696-3525.
