Prior to the game, the teams lined up along the sideline where most of the fans were sitting. In between the teams stood Mac- Dougall, who sang “The Star- Spangled Banner.” Lehman's players took the field wearing red, white or blue headbands and dominated the game. Wasser scored a goal in each half, and set up a third by Traci Ragukas as Wasser was the dominant player on the field. Tracy Hudak recorded two saves. : Trail upset Lehman in the 2000 District 2 Class 2A semifi- nals. The Black Knights have won their three matches since. Standout junior Joe: Mari- anacci scored the game's only points on a 94-yard punt return in the first quarter as Wyoming Area shut out Dallas 6-0 in a Wyoming Valley Conference Di- vision 2 game. “He is a great player,” said Dallas coach Ted Jackson. “But other than that I thought we did a great job on him. He makes them a really good football team.” After the defense stymied Dal- las on third down at midfield, Marianacci fielded a bouncing punt at his 6-yard line, then worked his way down the right sideline to score with 16 sec- onds left in the first quarter. Her team played rival Dallas on Monday. Wednesday it was talented Lackawanna Trail. Fri- day it was powerhouse Wyoming Valley West. “I said last week, ‘If we're 6-0 at the end of this week, we know we're OK,” Lipski said. Lehman, last year's PIAA Class 2A runner-up, proved to be a little better than “OK.” The Knights capped their perfect week with a 1-0 win over the Spartans on Friday to improve to 6-0. Lehman defeated Dallas (4-0) and Lackawanna Trail (3- 0) earlier in the week. The Knights got a goal from Carla Chiampi just 3:12 in, with a Lisa Wasser assist, to take the lead for good. Black Knights give Coughlin first win From Staff Reports WILKES-BARRE — Coughlin senior Steve Kerestes ran for 109 yards and a touchdown and the Crusader defense allowed Lake-Lehman just one score in a 20-6 victory at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium. Early in the first quarter, the Crusaders forced Lake-Lehman to punt from its 39. Mark Yankowski’'s punt hit his own player in the back. Coughlin’s Lenny Sarnick scooped up the ball and returned it 32 yards for the game's first touchdown. The closest the Black Knights came to scoring during the first half was late in the second ‘quarter. On third-and-seven from the Lehman 22, Coughlin quarterback John Vincarelli was intercepted by Brandon Burkhardt. Burkhardt returned the pick 80 yards to the end zone, but it was called back on a holding penalty. After Coughlin took a 20-0 lead, Lehman finally got on the board. The biggest play during the 64-yard drive was a 9-yard pass from Brian Cornia to Bran- don Wren on third-and-9 from the Crusader 11 yard line.
