Feinstein Wins Henderson Scholarship Ross Feinstein of Shavertown was recently awarded a Hender- son Scholarship one of two . granted annually by Wyoming Seminary College School. The son of Peter and Jane Fe- instein, Ross will be a freshman at the Upper School in Septem- ber. He participated on the MathCounts Team, served as a Blue Team leader, and was cap- tain of both the soccer and bas- ketball teams. Recently he re- ceived the Dr. Sheldon H. Kluger Memorial Science Award, the Preparatory Marjorie Harvey Smith Award (community service), and the Anna M. Olcott Award for Schol- arship and Conduct at the Low- er School Commencement. The Henderson Scholarship, now in its sixth year, is awarded annually to two Wyoming Semi- nary Lower School eighth grade students who will go on to the Upper School and who exhibit characteristics of academic achievement, community leader- ship, high performance and su- perior communication skills. Thimot studies in Paris this summer Carolyn Thimot, a junior at Dallas High School, has been accepted by Summer Study Pro- grams of Melville, N.Y. to partici- pate in a five week program at the American University of Paris this summer. She will be attend- ing classes, in English, for col- lege credit. Summer Study Pro- grams, Inc. has received nation- al recognition on CNN, in The New York Times, and in USA TODAY for their pre-collegiate programs at Penn State Univer- sity. The University of Colorado at Boulder, and The American University of Paris. Thimot, a gifted honor student at Dallas, was also selected this past year to participate in the Leadership Wilkes-Barre pro- gram. She and 10 other local area students raised over $900 for the Make-a-Wish Founda- tion, by organizing and running the Hoops for Hopes 3-on-3 bas- ketball tournament held March 16 at Wyoming Seminary. Carrie was recently elected Dallas Stu- dent Council Treasurer and is an active member of the Junior Steering Committee and other clubs, plays for the Dallas High School softball and tennis teams and is a dancer at the Major Performing Arts Center, where she serves as a substitute teacher. She is the daughter of Brian and Nancy Thimot, Shavertown. Gilligan attends Governor’s School John Gilligan, a student at Dallas High School, is attending the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh’ Students in the pro- gram attend science, mathemat- ics and computer science class- es, taught by college professors, morning, afternoon and evenings, Monday through Sat- urday for five weeks. Ninety students were chosen from nearly 500 applicants for this year’s scholarship program. In early June, John also. at- tended a week-long Summer Seminar at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He was the recipient of the Science Award for the ju- nior class at this year’s high school Awards Banquet. He was also awarded a medal and schol- arship to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by the math and sci- ence departments at Dallas High School. He was elected senior class president for the coming school year. : John is the son of Marty and Mary Barbara Gilligan of Dallas. Rosenthal named to dean’s list at Vermont Elizabeth E. Rosenthal, of Shavertown, has been named to the dean's list for the spring 2002 semester at the University of Vermont. Rosenthal is a se- nior majoring in Music in the College of Arts & Sciences. To be named to the dean’s lists, students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their re- spective college or school. BuraKiewicz earns Slippery Rock dean’s list Santina A. Burakiewicz of Trucksville, was recently named to the Slippery Rock University Dean's List for the Spring 2002 semester. To qualify for the SRU dean's list, a student must earn a 3.5 grade-point average or higher on a 4-point scale while taking 12 or more graded hours of course credit. DeFrain named to Geneva College dean’s list Rebecca DeFrain of Sweet Valley, has been named to the Dean’s List for the spring of 2002 at Geneva College. Dean’s List status is awarded to students who earn a 3.6 grade point average or better. Rebecca, daughter of Cheryl DeFrain, is a Sophomore majoring in Business.
