| | 10 Dallas Post Dallas, PA Thursday, July 25, 2002 Bullpen (continued from page 9) Best Bets: The Bears, Eagles and Patriots had some of the most success, and seem to be on track this year to do the same. They are loaded with a mix of youth and experience, and should provide a plethora of points each week. As far as kickers are concerned, no one has been as consistent as Den- ver's Jason Elam over the past couple of years. He has a strong foot, and will help con- siderably in leagues where dis- tance is as important as amount of field goals and extra points. 4. Beware of one week wonders. It seems that every year, someone in leagues I've played in tries to climb out of the cellar with one week won- ders, or players who shine one week, and then disappear into the turf for the rest of the sea- son. For some players, all it takes is that one week to get their big break, but one week is not enough time to gauge a fan- tasy player's importance. Most leagues don’t allow many bench players, so the risk of losing someone important on a gam- ble is not a wise choice. Best Bet: Try and hold out on picking up players until they have at least two weeks to prove they deserve to be on your roster. 5. Evaluate your competi- tion's trade bait. Unlike the NFL, many FFL players dangle players out as trade bait be- cause there is something wrong with the player, or they don't want to give up to get. Make sure what you're getting is comparable to what you're giv- ing up. There sure are some dirty players out there, and a bad trade could mean the dif- ference between first-place and somewhere in the middle. Read up on players before making the trade. These are only a few tips to get you started in a fantasy . football league, and you'll prob- ably find an equation that works better for you as you go. Just remember, these leagues are meant to have fun, but many like the competition and want to win at all costs. Timothy J.
