4 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Thursday, December 20, 2001 ake-Lehman concert puts a song in the holiday air By ELIZABETH ANDERSON Post Correspondent LEHMAN - The sweet sounds of more than 70 in- struments filled the air last Saturday as the Lake- Lehman Symphonic Band, under the direction of Ed- ward A. Richards, per- formed its fall concert to an appreciative crowd at the high school auditorium. A moving display of fami- ly and community filled nearly three-fourths of the auditorium seats. The program began with Robert W. Smith's “The Black Hawk Soars,” a live- ly, energetic piece. The en- semble then tackled the difficult four-part “Second Suite In F” by Gustav Holst. Drawn from British folk melodies, this chal- lenging piece is on the list for many state band com- petitions, said Richards. The four movements of the piece went from moody and sad to sparkling and play- ful. The sounds of the anvil and steam of a hot iron plunged into water heard in the third movement, “Song of the Blacksmith,” formed vivid pictures in the mind, just as images of woodland sprites danced into view in the fourth movement, “Dargason.” The percussion ensemble’s rendition of “Tang Ooga Booga” by Rowloff Percus- sion was different and en- tertaining. Other selections included E.E. Bagley’s march “National Anthem,” a wonderful chorale by Robert Sheldon called “Let Evening Come,” a distinc- tive arrangement by Claude T. Smith of “America the Beautiful,” and two holiday arrangements, Jim Swearingen’s “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” and Leroy An- derson’s “Christmas Festi- val.” Mr. Richards’ pride in his symphonic band was obvi- ous and well-placed. How- ever, such a skilled and hardworking group de- serves to be seen and not just heard. It was nearly impossible to see past the front row of musicians crowded onto the stage. Proud parents and friends craned their necks and switched seats in vain, try- ing for a glimpse of their favorite band member. With any luck, the high school renovations project will address this issue and offer better accommoda- tions for these and future talented musicians. Nevertheless, the evening was enjoyable and the mu- sic impressive. Mr. Richards and the band are already starting to practice for the Spring 2002 con- cert.
