a ss Rl SS — p— PT Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, April 25, 2001 [4 Dallas Middle School students participate in science olympiad Fifteen seventh and eighth grade gifted science students from the Dallas Middle School participated in the Science Olympiad held at Penn State, wilkes-Barre campus. Eight hundred students from 33 Northeastern Pennsylva- nia schools participated. The Olympiad is made up of 23 events ranging from astronomy to zoology. The Dallas students medaled in three categories: Megan Vodzak, Lenore Kaplan and Adam Snider took first place in experimental design; Megan Vodzak and Lenore Kaplan placed second in the astronomy event; Sara Swepston and Melissa Evans took second place in the write it-do it event. Bands from the eastern coast concluded the fall marching sea- son at the Atlantic Coast Champi- onship, held at the Lackawanna Coun- ty Stadium. One senior member from each of the four recognized groups was award- ed a $500 scholar- ship from the Tour- nament of Bands and the National Judges Association. Natalie Shiskowski, a six year member of the Lake- Lehman High School Band, cap- tured the honor in Group II. Natalie was the first student from Lake-Lehman to ever re- ceive this scholarship. Students applied for the scholarship under the sponsor- ship of their school band direc- tor and were required to write an essay pertaining to the effect that band participation had on the field with her fellow band of- ficers for her final award cere- mony, her name was announced as the recipient among seven finalists. Na- | talie said, has taught me dedi- devotion, and the true mean- ing of competition. Competition is not only against other bands or people, but against yourself, in an attempt to be the best you can possibly be.” Natalie is the trea- surer of the band and has been a section leader of the clarinets for two years. She plays clarinet during marching season and is the principal oboist during con- cert season. She plans to pur- sue a career in computer engi- neering upon graduation. Na- talie resides in Lehman Town- ship with her parents and her brother. their life.
