School Board Director Sheila Gionfriddo voted against the plan due to not receiving a copy prior to the meeting. In other business, the board appointed five members to the Act 50 Study Commission. Commission members include; Moderno - Rossi, ‘school board member; Joetta Hartman, James Baloga, William Reinert and Edwin Kern. The commis- sion will examine the effects of shifting from “nuisance” and property taxes to a greater re- liance on income-based taxes for the school district. The | k: commission will have 90 days to make a nonbinding recom- mendation that they deem ap- propriate and to present the the Lake-Lehman School Board. Superintend Robert Roberts wanted to clear up any misin- formation regarding a plastic bag with a potentially danger- ous substance found in a lock- er at the Lake Lehman Middle Level Building on April 5. Roberts said the principle had been informed by a student about a strong oder of gasoline coming from a student's locker on the first floor of the build- ing. The locker was opened and a plastic sandwich bag containing gasoline, styrofoam and cooking oil was found. “The situation was handled in the time span of about five minutes,” Roberts said. “The locker where the substance was found was about 15 feet from an exit door. It would have taken much longer to evacuate the building.” A full investigation of this event is underway with the co- operation of local law enforce- ment, officials of EMA, and the district attorney’s office, stated a press release from the super- intendents office. The student is currently in the juvenile court system and Roberts said he will recom- mend to the board that the student be expelled from school for one year as district policy dictates. Finally, at the May 1 work session, board members will be presented with the plans of the new fieldhouse and gym- nasium. The board is revisiting the potential shortage of locker room space for fall and spring sports. All booster club and athletic team members are en- couraged to attend. Yolunteers needed to keep PA beautiful No plans for Sat., April 28? Why not put on some old blue jeans and get a little dirty for a good cause? The Anthracite Scenic Trails Association is inviting anyone who would like to help clean up the Back Mountain Trail on “Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Trucksville Fire Hall at the cor- ner of Carverton Road and Route 309. The Back Mountain Trail is still in its infancy with two miles of the project complete, said Mark Albrecht, member of An- thracite Scenic Trails Associa- tion. This is the fifth year for the Day. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (Penn DOT) will provide volunteers with gloves, trash bags and the famous or- ange vests. Penn DOT will also pick up the collected trash at the end of the day. “Penn DOT has been so good to this trail bers, local church youth groups have been invited to help with the clean-up. “We survive on vol- unteer help and donations,” Al- brecht said. The more volun- teers, the more work gets done faster, he said. Albrecht encour- ages anyone interested in lend- ing a hand to get involved on Clean-up (continued from page 1) for pulling the white goods and stated that any profits from the sale of the white goods would be remitted to the borough. Overall, the Waste Reduction bid was the lower of the two submitted. Due to the time restraints placed on council, Waste Re- duction’s bid was accepted with the amendment that the sborough manager would inves- ‘tigate the explanation to the white goods cost with a five to one vote. Dallas Borough spends between $10,000 to $12,000 each year for the spring clean up. In other business, Joseph J Valenta of Village Green, Dal- | was ‘las, expressed concern regard- ing burning on Wyoming Street. He said that on Easter Sunday someone was burning “and the smoke was drifting to the back of his house through his patio doors. “Basically, I concerned about the burning in general and wanted to know if you (council) could do away with it,” Valenta be asked council members. Council is concerned about the Sunday burning, because it is not a designated burning day in the borough. “You can’t burn on Sunday, Monday or Thursdays,” said Mayor Tim Carroll. All burning must be in a closed container with a mesh screen. : Open burning is only al- lowed by permit and there are restrictions, said Bill Peiffer, council president. Valenta said he was reluctant to call 911 because of burning, but that it was a problem. “Whether they have a permit or not, if it's bothering some- one they have to put it out,” said Carroll. He also suggested that if the burning was bother- some for Valenta or any other resident to call the police's non-emergency number. In addition, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (Penn DOT) approved the Memorial Day Parade route and alternative route. Finally, Dallas Borough has been approved for $120,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds. for capital improvements and will enter in a cooperative agreement with Luzerne County. “Growing Quality is a Family Business Since 1930” Spring Into Spring!
