pe 10 Dallas Post Dallas, PA April 25, 2001 Lake Lehman High School students know an By M.B. GILLIGAN Post Correspondent LAKE LEHMAN - Fifteen Lake Lehman High School students recently placed in the regional National History Day competi- tion held at Penn State Lehman Campus. The team had winning entries in group media, group and indi- vidual exhibits, individual per- formance and research papers. All presentations incorporated this year’s theme of Frontiers in History. “Our presentation was titled Betty Friedan and the Feminist Mystique. We're feminists and we're interested in our history,” said Leigh Dodson who, together with Stefanie Bendik, earned a first place award for their docu- mentary. “I'm very proud of the fact that in the last four years Lake Lehman students have taken 11 of the 12 top places for research papers at the regional competi- tion,” said John Comitz, history teacher and event moderator at Lake Lehman for many years. “That's a real college skill. Miss Shields, our librarian, is a top- notch, super, super helper for these kids when they're getting their resources together.” Ninth graders in the Humani- ties class with Comitz and Mrs. Weyman, juniors in American Studies, team-taught by Comitz and Mr. Dombroski, and juniors and seniors in Advanced Place- ment U.S. History are all re- quired to work on a History Day project. Most work is done out- side of class and Comitz picks the best of these to go on to competition. W-B Vo-Tech adult classes scheduled Wilkes-Barre Area Vocational-Technical School has scheduled three adult evening classes to be- gin during April. A 6-session course in motorcy- cle maintenance will begin on April 18 and will cover routine maintenance and repairs. course will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Pennsylvania Vehicle Inspection and Forklift “I don't teach sophomore classes so they don’t usually participate but this year Jared Salla asked if he could do this on his own,” said Comitz. “My presentation was on Child Labor Reform, which I developed from last year’s project on the coal mining industry,” said Jared who earned a third place honor. Sarah Davis, a senior, has perfected her method of individ- ual performance in her three years of competition. Her topic this year was Elizabeth Black- well, the first woman doctor. “She starts off in a long black period dress that is held togeth- er with Velcro. As she is talking, she walks behind a screen and comes out as Blackwell in surgi- cal attire,” said Comitz. “It is very effective.” Sarah placed first in regionals and took first place at the state level in last year’s competition. Other regional winners in- clude: Gordan Stransky, John Hannish, Bryan Lazur, Janet Schweizer, Donora Hillard, Cliff Culver, Lou Spaciano, Dan Blid- ner, Brian McMahon, Nick Callahan, and Steve Honeywell. Students are encouraged to revise and improve their presen- tation between each level of competition, so their work isn’t finished yet. State competition will be held on May 9 and 10 at Penn State University Park. Last year the team from Lake Lehman was selected as the top school in the state. The national competition will be held at the University of Maryland in June. The group media presentation entitled Theft in the Black Hills earned meet three or This Operations will start on Monday, April 23, with The Dallas Post, your hometown news Forklift scheduled for late afternoon and Vehicle Inspection for early evening.
