POST PHOTOS/JIM PHILLIPS Back Mountain police seek support for MDA golf tourney The Back Mountain Police As- sociation (BMPA) will be hosting a fund-raising golf tournament in April, with all proceeds to benefit The Muscular Dystrophy Association. The BMPA is seek- ing support from local business- es and individuals to help make this fund-raiser both enjoyable and successful. The tournament will be held at the Four Seasons Golf Course, Exeter, on April 21, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The BMPA is seeking contri- butions from local businesses, in the form of hole sponsors. As a $50 hole sponsor, a sign with the business name will be placed on a tee. To register as a hole sponsor, forward business name, address, and telephone number along with a check for $50 per hole. Mail the informa- tion to the Back Mountain Police Association, P.O. Box 100, Lehman, PA, 18627. BMPA is also in need of merchandise do- nations to be offered as prizes. Businesses and individuals are also invited to enter teams in-the tournament. The format for the tournament is four play- er “Captain and Crew” teams. Cost is $55 per player. To regis- ter a team, forward a list of four players, identifying one as Cap- tain. Youth soccer registration March 31 Back Mountain Youth Soccer Association is holding registration ® for the Fall, 2001 Intramural Soccer Season on Saturday, March 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Dallas Senior High School Cafeteria. Age groups U-8 through U-18 will be accepted. Eligible players must be at least 6 years of age before August 1, 2001. Social Security Numbers and proof of age required. Scoring for the Pirates were Kevin Zirnheld with 2 goals and Drew Clauss with 1 goal. Assists for the Pirates were handed out by Sean Davis, Chris Hacken, Billy Nugent, Ricky Rose, Shavertown, Kevin Nagle, Catlin Riley, Matt Benedetto, Nick Lieback, Matt Luksic and Alex Slocum, both of Shavertown. Slocum made 18 saves in the Pirate net. Scoring for the Daddios were John Nugent, Sr., with 2 goals and Pete Lieback with 1 goal. Rick Rose, Shavertown, Jack Davis, Bartt Slocum, Shavertown, Dave Clauss, Rich Benedetto, and Steve Zirnheld all had assists for the Dad- dio’s. Frank Hacken anchored the Pirate defense along with goaltender Chris Riley, who had 41 saves to preserve the tie. Laura Slocum, Shavertown, was named the game's MVP. The Pirates are next in action on March 23 at the Center Ice Tournament in Oaks, Pa., whole the Daddios concluded their season with this game. ® DHS Soccer Club to host craft show The Dallas High School Soccer Club is sponsoring the annual Spring Craft Show on Sunday, April 1, at the Dallas Senior High School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 100 vendors from Pennsyl- vania and New Jersey will be represented, selling various crafts in- cluding semi-precious gemstone jewelry, needlework, candies, ce- ramics, potpourri, quilts, stenciled lamp shades, woodcrafts, wreaths, hand-made dolls and home made candy. Soccer Club members will be selling lunch and baked goods throughout the day. There is no admission charge. Lions win championship The Lions BMYSA Penn State U-8 indoor soccer team finished their regular season with an undefeated 9(wins)-1(tie)-0O(losses) record and captured the League Championship by defeating the Mustangs 3-1. GOH Gators sweep playoffs The Gate of Heaven boys varsi- ty finished a sweep through the West Side Catholic League play- offs with a well played 61-54 vic- tory over St. Jude’s of Mountain- top. In earlier playoff action the Gators defeated St. Nick's-St. Mary's 64-43 and Sacred Heart Wilkes-Barre, 83-50. In the championship game at Bishop O'Reilly High School, the Gators were led in scoring by Tim Crossin with 19 and Brian Ostrowsky with 18. Trailing at the end of three quarters, a strong defensive ef- fort led by Ryan Murray and Jared Nothstein fueled the comeback. At the end of the fourth quarter, clutch foul shooting by Sean Leary, 6-of-6, and Ostrowsky, 5-0of-6, pre- served the lead. Leary finished with 10, Nothstein contributed 8 points and Murray 6. Other members of the team are Conor Judge, Jim DeRemer and Mike Clemente. In other activities during Championship Sunday Tim Crossin and Brian Ostrowsky were named to the league all- star team and Sean Leary re- ceived the Sportsmanship Award. Leary also won the league foul shooting competition. Crossin placed second in the 3- point shooting contest. The Gators finished play with a 20-2 record. league Volleyball tournament at LCCC The Health and Physical Education Department of Luzerne County Community. College will hold its’ 15th annual volleyball tournament on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1, beginning at 9 a.m., at the college gymnasium. Saturday’s tournament will be co-ed with at least two females per team. An all-male tourna- ment will be held on Sunday. The tournament will be round robin play followed by single elimination play-offs. Teams are responsi- ble for supplying up and down officials. Registration deadline is March 23. Cost is $85 per team, per day. This year’s fund-raiser is being held in honor of Ruby Carmon, retired LCCC health and physical education professor.
