The Dallas Post Section 2 January 3, 2001 SPORTS ROUNDUP GIRLS BASKETBALL Dallas 66, Coughlin 46 The Mountaineers defeated the Crusaders Dec. 26 in the opening round of the Munley Tournament played at Crestwood. Freshmen Meredith Lacey and Shannon Tho- mas combined for 35 points in the game, almost outscoring Coughlin on their own. The defense of Dallas held Coughlin to a total of 15 points in the first and third quarters. Lacey was the high scorer in the game with 19, followed by Thomas with 16. Crys- tal Heffner and Rosalyn Wentko each contributed seven points. Dallas 60, Crestwood 51 Dallas came alive in the fourth quarter by scoring 24 points in the period in winning the championship game of the Munley Tournament against the host Dec. 27. Five fresh- men combined to score 47 of the 60 Mountaineer points. Rosalyn Wentko led the scoring with 13 points, fol- lowed by Halli Williams and Shan- non Thomas with 10 each. Meredith Lacey, Jackie Hardwick and senior Stacey Amann added seven points apiece. Lehman 51, Lackawanna Trail 38 A 25-point third quarter sparked the Black Knights to a homecourt victory over Lackawanna Trail on Dec. 27. Danielle Kern's 16 points were the high total of the game. She was also a part of the defense that held Trail to two points total in the second period. Kieran Lucarino and Lisa Wasser added eight points each, while Kari Maskalis contributed seven. Lake-Lehman 69, G.A.R. 56 Six field goals, including four from three-point range, by Kari Maskalis led to her scoring 16 points in leading Lake-Lehman to a road win against G.A.R. last week. Lisa Wasser, Gina Coombs. and Danielle Kern followed with 14, 13, and 12 points respec- tively. Wasser and Coombs did most of their damage from the foul line, with Coombs shooting 7-10 and Wasser going a perfect 8-8. The Knights as a team went 19-25 from the stripe, a 76% clip. BOYS BASKETBALL Wyoming Valley West 63, Lehman 47 The Spartans defeated the Black Knights in the opening round of the Crossin Tournament with a comfort- able 16-point win Thursday evening. Knights Matt Dunn and Jared Sadowski combined for 30 points to lead the local effort. Dunn led the team with 20 points, nine points coming on three 3-point field goals. Lake-Lehman trimmed the lead to 10 points early in the fourth quarter, but could not manage to cut it to single digits. Dallas 79, Northwest 54 The Mountaineers sprinted out to a 19-0 lead before Northwest made it onto the scoreboard in opening round play of the Crossin Tournament Thursday night. After one period, Dallas led 30-4. Chuck Suppon made 10 field goals and finished with 22 points. = He added nine rebounds from the center position. Senior Jay Carroll scored a dozen points and finished with a double-double as he dished out 11 assists in three periods of play. Dan Fetko added fourteen points. John Simonitis and Blake Saba each scored six points. Harveys Lake Little League signups Harveys Lake Little League will be holding registration for the 2001 sea- son. on Wednesday. Jan. 10 and Thursday,Jan. 11 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Little League Concession Stand. They were not the most cordial of hosts, sending the Lady Lions home after a 51- 38 pounding. Area youths make Killer Bees semifinals Six Back Mountain students are among the 16 semifinalists for the Student-Athlete Awards sponsored by the Killer Bees Athletic Club, Wilkes-Barre. Nominees had to carry at "A" average of better to be nominated. Buddy Shah, a senior at Wyoming Seminary, is the lone Back Mountain representative among the boys semifinalists. Back Mountain students dominate the girls side, with five of the eight nominees. They are: Sarah Davis and Maureen White, Lake-Lehman; Melonie Sappe, Carrie Strasser and Amie Tkaczyk, Dallas. * The top three students in each category will be named finalists and will be invited to the club's awards ban- quet, which will be held Saturday.
