"IT held a car wash at my home to raise money. [| have participated in several fund-raisers through- out the year with the Firefighters Association and other associations who were raising money for MDA." he explained. Brian is now eligible for the Pennsylvania youth volunteer of the year awards, which will take place in February. The two state honorees, one at the middle school level and one from high school, each receive $1,000, a silver me- dallion and a trip to Washington, D.C. with one parent or guardian. Runners-up at the state level re- ceive bronze medallions and cer- tificates of Excellence. State winners travel to Wash- ington, D.C. in May to compete for - an additional $5,000 award, gold medallions and crystal trophies for their sponsoring organization. Koerner, executive director of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Eighth grade student Tiffany Gergel was awarded a Certificate of Merit at the recent awards pro- gram. "[ worked at the Veteran's Ad- ministration Hospital for 99 hours over the summer. I was a tour guide for the dedication ceremony for the new ambulatory care addi- tion," said Tiffany. "I also worked as an office assistant providing clerical support to the Medical Care Cost Recovery Section." Tiffany has worked at the VA for the last:two summers. "My aunt, Linda Sheperis-Stahl, told me about the volunteer program. She works there and helped me to get involved," Gergel said. "These young people exemplify what Dallas Middle School is all about. They are great leaders in all aspects of school life," said Anthony Martinelli, the principal. “They have distinguished them- .selves through their volunteer service. The workshop was entitled “Children and the Internet”. Three speakers from across the state shared projects they had done involving children and the “internet. Statistics for the month of November include the following: total circulation, 6,751; books added, 400; new borrowers, 65; active borrowers, 13,372. New display Janet Banks's collection of teddy bears is on display for the coming month. Many of the bears were gifts from foster children; others were given ‘to her by Cub Scouts and by friends of her children. Janet has been a child advocate for 25 years and a foster mother for 10 years. In that time she has raised 17 children besides her own. She speaks highly of the support sys- tem afforded foster parents in the area. Teddy bears have more than a casual significance in her life.
