Back Mountain Trail receives $5,000 grant The Back Mountain Trail re- ceived $5,000 from Representa- tive George Hasay to use for the construction of the Trucksville Trailhead. It is located next to Trucksville Pharmacy on Carverton Road. DCED (Depart- ment of Community Economic Development) funds are being specifically used for this purpose. The Back Mountain Trail ex- tension from Post Road to Carverton was made possible by an easement agreement between Anthracite Scenic Trails Associa- tion (ASTA) and Kingston Town- ship. Recently, Jay Elston, con- tractor, opened the Trail. The Trailhead is open for use, but will not be completed until summer of 2001. A design must be submit- ted by ASTA, approved by the Kingston Township Supervisors, and accepted by the Trucksville Pharmacy first. The Back Mountain Trail is presently submitting a grant ap- plication to DCNR (Department of Conservation and Natural Re- sources) to contract for engineer- ing services for twelve more miles of Trail development. A public meeting will be held at the King- ston Township Building on Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. on East Center St. in Shavertown to discuss this exten- sion from Kirby Park to Luzerne Borough and Trucksville to Har- veys Lake through Shavertown, Dallas Borough and Dallas Town- ship. ASTA has already received $480,000 from PennDOT and the Federal Highway agency under Transportation Enhancement Act 21 for construction costs. Interfaith Council to honor Sisters of Mercy The Interfaith Council of Wyo- ming Valley will honor the Sisters of Mercy of the Dallas Regional Community at their Annual Com- munity Interfaith Luncheon to be held on Monday, Nov. 20 at Genetti's Best Western Hotel in Wilkes-Barre. The Citation of Dis- tinction will be conferred upon the Sisters of Mercy as they celebrate 125 years of service in the Wyo- ming Valley. The Interfaith Council was es- tablished in 1977 by leaders of the Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths to provide a structure that enhances and strengthens inter- faith relations in the Wyoming Valley by exploring and address- ing the social structures of the civic community and the social problems within the region. The Sisters of Mercy were chosen to be honored at this year's lunchon in light of their leadership role in addressing social problems and commitment to enhancing the life of the community The focus of the citation will be on those activities which specifi- cally demonstrate the ideals of human dignity, compassion and friendship for all people regardless of religious affiliation. Four of the Sisters’ sponsored ministries will be highlighted.
