The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, November 8, 2000 5 LETTERS Says Kingston Twp. was wrong to cut trees To the Citizens of Kingston Township, PA: Let it be known that from No- vember 3-5, 2000 on the watch of the current Kingston Township Board of Supervisors, a 105 year- old Pennsylvania white ash tree was. removed from. the enbankment above the old Town- ship building at Carverton Road. This tree had no internal blem- ishes. This clearcut by "TP Tree Ser- vice" under contract by Kingston Township, netted at least two full logging trucks of prime, hardwood timber. According to an interview with Mr. Jeffrey K. Box, Townsghip Manager, on November 3, 2000, most of the trees designated for removal were dead or dying. This is false. The photoraphic record and inspection show that with a few exceptions, the trees were healthy and posed no public safety hazard. In the name of public safety, Kingston Township has clearcut the trees on a steep enbankment. This critically destabilizes the slope above the building, threat- ening the parking lot below and the newly opened Anthracite Sce- nic Trail at the crest of the em- bankment. Erosion, if unchecked, from this site will degrade the water quality of Toby's Creek, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. The unilateral action by King- ston Township supervisors to cut these trees represents: (1) a failure by the township to work in partnership with commu- nity environmental leaders; (2) an illegal "takings" of a com- munity resource without due con- sideration and process: (3) ignorance of the Chesapeake Bay compactand Luzerne County erosion managementregulations; (4) flagrant disregard of Article 1, Section 27, of the Pennsylvania Constitution: "The people have the right to clean air, pure water, and the preservation of natural, scenic historic, and esthetic values of the environment. Pennsylvania's public natural resources are the common property ofall the people, including generations yet to come. As trustees of these resources, the Commonwealth shall conserve and maintain them for the benefit of all people." : I call upon all citizens of King- ston Township to protest this clearcut and to demand complete ecological and engineering resto- ration of the damaged site.
