Underwater adventures Back Mountain EXT ) Outdoors fis As Summer progresses and it getswarmer, more people will head to the water to cool off. Some will go to the pool. Some will go water skiing. Whatever the sport they decide to participate in, they will have most of their fun on the water's surface. There are a mi- nority of folks however, that de- rive their pleasure from being be- low the surface of the water. In our area probably the most prominent item Scuba divers search for is old bottles. In the cold waters of Pennsyl- vania, the water temperature av- erages in the 50's near what is called the thermocline. The ther- mocline is an imaginary line drawn in the water at which a distinct temperature difference is noticed, The depth at which the ther- mocline is situated depends on time of the year and the depth of the body of water. Many Scuba divers do not spend much time below the ther- mocline due to the cold water temperature, even if they wear neoprene wet suits. Matt Kapitula went 3-for-4 for National, Gracjan Kraszewski, Dave Harding and Alan Sheridan each went 2-for-4, and Ronnie enced and serious divers wear what is called a dry suit. Water will lower body temperature 25 times faster than air. These suits allow divers to stay much warmer since water does not contact their bodies, so dry suit divers are able to be comfortable below the ther- mocline for extended periods of time without getting cold. Some divers use their training to do good things for the environ- ment. Many divers, while below the surface will collect garbage they find on the bottom. Accord- ing to a few local divers, some lakes, even though beautiful on the surface, are a pitiful sight to behold underwater. In lakes such as Harveys Lake there are reports of car batteries (some dumped in piles), tires, 50-gallon drums, re- frigerators, and many other envi- ronmentally hazardous materials. These kinds of materials must be avoided by the sport divers due to possible injuries to themselves and could also cause more envi- ronmental problems if disturbed by anyone other than a profes- sional cleanup crew.
