6 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, June 21, 2000 ‘Scouting for Food' wins honor for Girl and Boy Scout councils Four local Girl Scout and Boy Scout Councils have won a na- tional award in the 27th Colgate Youth For America program which honors young people for their outstanding and innovative con- tributions to their communities and who demonstrate commit- " ment tomaking a difference in the lives of others. The Scout Coun- cils received this award for Scout- ing For Food 2000, a mid-winter food drive in which nearly 5,000 girls and boys in 10 counties col- lected and donated over 201,000 pounds of food to over 70 food pantries, soup kitchens and shel- ters throughout the region. Penn's Woods and Scranton . Pocono Girl Scout Councils and the Columbia-Montour and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Coun- cils of the Boy Scouts of America worked together to make Scout- ing for Food the award winning project. In a post-project survey, 97 percent of the Troops reported that participation in Scouting For Food helped them learn the im- portance of community service while 91 percent gained a greater appreciation for the needs of oth- ers. The Councils, with the help of the Commission on Economic Opportunity, are designing a spe- cial patch program which Scout- ing For Food participants will be able to earn as they learn more about the whole issue of hunger and nutrition, Scouting For Food was the first time that the four Scout Councils worked together to undertake such a large project. The Colgate Youth for America program, currently in its 27th year, invites U. S. clubs and troops from six youth serving organiza- tions: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4- H, Camp Fire Girls Incorporated, and Boys and Girls Clubs, to en- ter their best community service projects in this annual national campaign. Levin receives Mozart scholarship The Mozart Club of Wilkes- Barre concluded the club year with a dinner meeting at which four scholarships were presented to area graduates all of whom were outstanding students musi- cians. Dan Levin received a Mozart Scholarship. He is a graduate of Wyoming Seminary and a clari- netist who will major in Music Composition at Indiana Univer- sity. The Mozart Club awards schol- arships yearly and helps to sup- port music in the community. HL Lions receive Eye Bank Award At a recent meeting of the Lower Wyoming Valley Lions Eye Bank held at the Centre Inn, Newport, the Harveys Lake Lions received an Eye Pledge Award for procuring the most eye donor pledges. This award is earned by bringing in the most eye donor pledges for three consecutive months during which the Lions Eye Bank meets. The Eye Bank obtains, tests, preserves and disburses valuable eye tissue making it available to eye surgeons for sight restoration. Anyone interested in becoming an eye donor may contact any Lion member.
