The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, June 7,2000 3 Dallas Area Women's Club will go out on top By M.B. GILLIGAN Post Correspondent DALLAS - The next meeting of the Dallas Area Federated Women’s Club will be its last. Club officers have announced that during its meeting Thursday, June 8, at 7 p.m., at Appletree Terrace in Dallas, the club will disband. The club was organized in 1978 by Jean Hillard to take over from the Dallas Junior Women’s Club. “We reached an age when we needed to break up the Junior Women’s Club and so we formed the Federated Women's Club. We did so many things for the com- munity that we really bonded as a group,” said Hillard. “The Junior Women's Club donated money to community projects and to fami- lies that needed it like fire victims. One year we raised $18,000 for a member who needed a kidney transplant.” Twenty-two years later the women feel the time has come for another change. “Ninety-five per- cent of our members work full- time. Many of us are also caring for parents and just no longer have time for the commitment required to run a club. We're in the prime of our life and just want to be free from that type of com- mitment. We have a terrific repu- tation for the things we have done and we want to end it on that note,” said Mrs. Hillard. The Federated Women's Club, which was a part of the Pennsyl- vania Federation of Women’s Clubs, was dedicated to making a difference in the world through service and community involve- ment. “Our main goal was educa- tion,” noted Jean Hillard. “Each year we awarded book scholarships to graduating high school seniors. We've also sup- POST FILE PHOTO The Dallas Area Federated Women's Club inititated new members at its meeting in March, 1991. The club membership was al- ways limited to 50 members be- cause it was a monthly dinner club. “We didn’t have to recruit new members. Our reputation attracted interested people,” said Hillard. Funds were never solicited from the community for the donations the club made. “Twice a year, five members would prepare a dinner and do- nate all of the food. Then, if we needed to raise more we would hold a ‘bakeless bake sale,” Hillard explained. “Rather than bake something for sale, you donated the cost of the ingredients. JoAnn Hall wrote a terrific little poem to explain how that worked.” Marie Barbose was the first club president in 1978. Other presidents included Nancy Rowlands, Kathy Wega, Nancy Ferko, Mary Perugino and Mary Griffin. Mary Alice Frederick, President for 1999-2000, stated in her President's Message, “We Kathy Wega 1989-1990 Jean Hillard 1990-1991 Nancy Ferko 1991-1992 Nancy Ferko 1992-1993 Nancy Rowlands 1993-1994 JoAnn Hall 1994-1995 Ellen Nagy 1995-1996 Mary Griffin 1996-1997 Shirley Forney 1997-1998 Lesley Douglas 1998-1999 enjoy the friendships we develop with our members .. We have fun doing good!” The June 8 meeting will be a celebration of club achievements . and past presidents are asked to bring their log books to share. Former and current members are invited to attend. “We plan to continue going out to dinner once a month but with- out the formality of a club. Some of us have been together for 35 years and the friendships we have formed are really special,” Hillard said. Evans referred to a letter of March, 2000 in which Russell Jones of Sun Oil said the com- pany would be responsible for payment. Apparently, they have questioned Zwiebel's job descrip- |, tion, which they characterize as “too broad.” Solicitor Evans sent a follow-up letter to Jones re- questing written confirmation that Sun will live up to its previous agreement. He said he is awaiting a reply. Joseph Brogna and Gerry Olenick of the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) were available for questions at the conclusion of the regular supervi- sors’ meeting Monday night. “Are there any further safety precautions with the new valve (which replaced the one which ruptured, causing the gasoline spill)?” asked Benjamin Barsh, Jr. Brogna replied, “The new valve won't allow water to freeze around the neck” which may have been the cause of the event. Barsh also asked about pre- cautions againsta fire, and wanted to know if Sun Oil has improved monitoring systems making it possible to detect a sudden change in pressure, such as with a pipe rupture, causing a safety stop to kick in. ; The issue of decontamination of the spill site was a hot topic. “Is consideration being given to the: required removal (by Sun Oil) of all contaminated soil?” Zwiebel asked. It was noted that Sun Oil is working on the site and moving soil for possible bioremediation in which bacteria and oxygen are added to the ground to speed the decontamination process. This triggered Evans to recall a Tommy Hilt ey (7) yoy ship was required to remove con- taminated soil. We had to float a bond issue.” He fears that DEP is not holding Sun Oil to the same standard by not requiring them to remove the contaminated soil which continues to be a source of water contamination. “Tell Sun todo what they have todo,” Evans said. “Get rid of that damn stuff. People are concerned about their water and cancer.” Brogna responded that total excavation is always an option. “We don’t dictate to them what they have to do. They are develop- ing a plan and we're doing what we feel has to be done.” Evans asked Zwiebel if he had been given any detailed reports or plans from Sun Oil. Zwiebel's “no” led Evans to conclude that “There’s nothing you can make a judgment on.” Brogna tried to reassure them. “If we find that there is one area that we see to be the source area, then excavation might be neces- sary,” he said. Evans later apologized for his outburstand thanked Brogna and Olenick for their attendance at the meeting. Want a photo that has appeared in The Dallas Post?
