Ne The Dallas Post Section 2 May 3, 2000 Sports BMT BASEBALL Cards top Pirates 5-4 in 8 Innings The Cardinals held off a second come- from-behind Pirates rally in the bottom half of the 8th inning to preserve the 5-4 victory. The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 6th to jump on top 2- 0. The Pirates responded with 2 runs in the bottom half to send the game into extra innings. Once again, the Cardinals took the lead with 3 runs in the top of the 8th only to see the Pirates come roaring back with 2 runs of their own. Patrick Murray picked up the save for the Cardi- nals by stranding the tying run on second base. Steve Yankowski struck out 7 in pitch- ing 4 hitless innings for the Cardinals. Winning pitcher Dylan Seeley struck out 6 in 3 innings on the mound. Mike Stolarick smashed 2 doubles for the Car- dinals. Seeley had a double and a single while Aaron Slaff collected a double for the winners. Gracjan Kraszewski struck out 6 in 3 innings and Alan Sheridan struck out 7 in 3 innings of pitching for the Pirates. Kraszewski banged out a double and a single while teammate Steve Cornia col- lected 2 singles. Rangers 18, A’s 8 Matt Ruch led the powerful Rangers offense with 3 hits. Brandon Rice and Mark Evans each collected a single and a double while Josh Backes smacked 2 triples. Rice struck out 4 in 3 innings on the mound and Joe Bailey picked up 2 strikeouts in relief. Josh Reese went 3 for 3 for the A's. Reese, Adam Singer and Mike Rudick each collected 2 strikeouts in a losing cause. Phillies 10, Astros 5 The Phillies resumed their winning ways fueled by strong pitching. Matt Kapitula, who struck out 9 in 3 innings, combined with Andrew Hanadel and Ryan Konopki to strike out a total of 15 Astros while allowing only 4 hits. Kapitula paced the Phillies offense with 2 hits while Brandon Wills cracked a triple and Jus- tin Neare laced a double. John Janerich smashed a triple tolead the Astros. Dodgers 9, Reds 0 Ronnie Shiner, Ben Thomas and John Giampietro combined to strke out 15 Reds and allow only 2 hits for the Dodg- ers. Mike Davies rapped 2 hits and Mike Clemente collected a double for the win- ners. Mike Prater powered the Reds offense with a double. Jake Stryjewski struck out 8 Dodgers in 3 strong innings on the mound. Orioles 14, Yankees 8 Christopher Parrish, Eric Tucker, Bobby Lenahan and Alex Kish each had multi-hit games for the winners. Parrish cracked a double and a triple, Tucker had 2 doubles and Lenahan and Kish each collected a single and a double. Conner Lenahan struck out 4 in registering the win. Pirates 8, Indians 0 Alan Sheridan and Gracjan Kraszewski combined to shut out the Indians. Sheridan struck out 8 in 3 innings while Kraszewski struck out 4 in 3 innings. Kraszewski smacked a double and 2 singles and collected 4 RBIs. Brad Fagula singled twice for the winners. Ian Van Kuyk struck out 5 in 3 innings for the Indians. Phillies 14, A’s 0 Brandon Wills, Andrew Hanadel and Matt Kapitula struck out 11 in tossing a combined no-hitter for the Phillies. Kapitula and Ryan Konopki each col- lected 3 hits for the winners, with Kapitula getting 2 doubles. Ronnie Ritts and Justin Neare each cracked 2 hits, while Neare and Hanadel each doubled. Rangers 9, Tigers 5 Joe Bailey struck out 6 Tigers to pick up the victory. At the plate, Bailey went 3 for 4 while teammate Brandon Rice went 2 for 3. Josh Backes and JJ Durr each clubbed a triple for the winners. Adam King went 2 for 3 and struck out 6 in a losing effort. Justin Orlandini collected 3 strikeouts in relief and also cracked a double. Reds 10, Cardinals 0 Jake Stryjewski blasted a 3-run homer as well as a single in leading the Reds to victory. Stryjewski combined with Mike Prater to shut out the Cardinals. See BMT BALL, pg 10 DYB 8th grade girls win North American Youth Basketball tournament Dallas Youth Basketball 8th grade girls won the championship of the North Ameri- can Youth Basketball Tournament at Scranton Prep over the weekend with a 48-17 win over Golden Cup Sporting Goods, which consists of players from Easton and Nazareth. Shannon Thomas led all scorers with a game high 16 points, followed by Meredith Lacey 12 points, Jackie Hardwick 7 points, Rosalyn Wentko 6 points, Ashleigh King 5 points and Caitlin Dukas 2 points. In semi-final action DYB defeated PAL Basketball which is from the Reading area 45-37. DYB was led by Thomas 17 points, Wentko 10 points, Hardwick, Lacey 6 points, King, Brooke Blase and Dukas 2 points apiece. In quarter final action, DYB beat CCYO Basketball, also from the Reading area 32-24. Dallas Youth Basketball was led by Thomas, Lacey 11 points, Hardwick 4 points, Wentko, King and Dukas 2 points each. Knights tough out Abington In a battle of all-stars, Lake-Lehman scored withabout 10 minutes left in the game to top Abington Heights 2-1 last week. Lehman entered the game just behind the Comets, who had lost only one game until this one. The Lady Knights managed to stop Abington Heights star Amber Jacobs, while Stephanie Frank and Janelle Perlis found the goal for Lehman. SPORTS ROUNDUP GIRLS SOCCER % Lehman 2, Abington Heights 1 Janelle Perlis scored in the second half off an assist from Jenna Elston to break a 1-1 tie and give the victory to the Black Knights in girls soccer action last week. Stephanie Frank had given Lake-Leh- man a 1-0 lead in the first half when she scored off a pass from Jonelle Lussi. ‘Keeper Deidre Wengen made 12 saves to hold the Abington offense to just the goal in the first half. Coughlin 4, Dallas 0 After a tight first half, the Coughlin Crusaders notched three goals in the. second half to distance themselves from Dallas in a game played in the middle of last week. Coughling scored one goal in the first half for a total of four in the game. Mountaineer keeper Melonia Sappe made 18 saves to keep the game relatively close. VOLLEYBALL Dallas 2, Abington 0 : Dallas cruised to a 15-8, 15-11 sweep Monday evening at home. Jeff Levinson had 9 service points and 20 assists, Ryan Onyshczak had 9 kills and 9 service points, Dave Marting had 7 kills and 15 digs, and Chris Organek had 7 kills and 11 digs. North Pocono 2, Dallas 1 Despite winning the first game, the Dallas boys dropped a tough one to North Pocono in boys volleyball action. The Mountaineers took the first game 16-14 before North Pocono took the final two by scores of 15-8 and 15-9. Chris Organek earned a double double with 13 kills and 14 digs in the contest, while Jeff Levinson earned the same honor with 22 assists and 16 digs. Neil Pollack earned 13 of the Dallas points on his serves. Dave Martin had six blocks, while Ryan Onyshczak added seven kills and five blocks. Dallas 2, Crestwood 0 The Mountaineers used a lot of rota- tion and still managed to knock off Crestwood on the road. Game scores were 15-8 and 15-6. Dave Martin had a pair of aces while collecting multiple ser- vice points and adding three blocks on the defensive end. Pat Besecker defen- sively added five kills in the match. TENNIS Dallas 5, Tunkhannock 2 The Mountaineers ended their losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Tunkhannock Tigers last week. Dallas took three of the four singles matches and two of the three doubles contests in earning the victory. Dan Laurenzi at #2 and John Beberus at #4 were victorious in singles in straight sets. Brittany Bartolini came back to win at #3 in three sets after dropping set one in a tiebreak. Laurenzi and Ryan Rother clinched the match for Dallas with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #2 doubles.
