We have some of the best structures and best people and culture in the na- tion. I get so impatient with people who putdown our area. Ijust wanted to show my pride in Northeastern Pennsylva- nia.” A book, “Insights: Notes and Sketches from the Mil- lennium Collection,” which chronicles the collection, is available for purchase. “The paintings show the outside but I wanted to share the inside view — my own inter- nal thoughts,” said Hand. The introduction to the book also explains the artist's thoughts about our area. Each of the descriptions includes a line drawing of the composition. Hand started to work on this project three years ago in the spring of 1997. “Some of the pieces were sold since that time but I was able to borrow them back for this show,” she said. All but two of the others are available for purchase. “The two that I am keeping are personal. One is of my own Dallas studio on Main Street and the other is of my mother-in-law’s house next door. Six generations of my husband's family have lived in that house over the years,” Hand said. Sue and Joe Hand have been married for 33 years. The artist was featured on the Windsor Park Stories Sun- day, April 23. This WVIA, Channel 44 show concen- trated on the story behind the Millennium Collection. “In my wildest dreams, I never thought that my work would be the subject of a one hour television show,” she said. Sue Hand's Millennium Collection will go on display at Allied Services John Heinz Institute in Wilkes-Barre this week. An opening reception is scheduled for Sunday, April 30 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The artist will give a short gallery presentation at 2:30 p.m. in the dining room. Sue Hand was captured at work on one of the 366 pieces of artwork in the Millennium Collection. The photo appears on the cover of the accompanying book, "Insights: Notes and Sketches from the Millennium Collection.” The photo was taken by Sue's husband, Joe Hand. “We sent out a lot of invita- tions. I tried to include all of my former art students, also, but I want them to know that if I missed some, they are all welcome,” she said. The entire Millennium Col- lection will be on display until May 31. A majority of the work will remain on view at John Heinz Institute until October 15. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Allied Services John Heinz Institute.
