This program will begin on April 5, and coincides with National “Kick Butts” Day. Letters will be written by Lake- Lehman middle level students and sent to the President of the United States. The students want the president and the public to know that cigarette companies have not changed. Tobacco companies still advertise in youth magazines, promote cigarette sales at retail stores located near schools, and oppose measures that make it difficult for kids to obtain ciga- rettes. The eighth grade wellness classes will attend an assembly provided by the American Cancer Society, during which time a speaker with a laryngectomy (re- moval of the larynx) will discuss his personal experiences concern- ing the use of tobacco. Senior high school students will contact area businesses asking them to assist and support the “Teens Against Tobacco” goals. An after-school program will be established to assist nicotine addicted teens as they endeavor to stop their use of tobacco.
