The Back Mountain squad breezed to three victories recently, including an 8-4 thrashing of Crestwood, and is the only undefeated team in the Northeastern PA Scholastic High School League. Bmt High School hockey team is at top of game The Back Mountain High School ice hockey team finished a very successful week with wins over previously undefeated Eastern Division leader Crestwood 8-4, Pittston 9-1, and Hazelton 10-5. They are now the only undefeated team in the Northeastern Pennsylvania Scholastic High School League. Eric Kowalec led the scoring parade against Crestwood with four goals, followed by Danny Ungvarsky with three goals and Kyle Reid with two goals and four assists. Martin Schmidt also added a single tally for Back Mountain. The Pittston game was decided in the very first period when BMT jumped to a 6-0 lead. Three goals by Eric Kowalec, two by Kyle Reid and a goal by Dave Schultz ended the period and in essence the game. Strong goal-tending by J.P. and Dan Drury limited the opposition. The offense continued in high gear as single goals were scored by Danny Ungvarsky, Dave Kowalec and Jeff Bolton. Kyle Reid had four assists followed by Chase Pennel and Chris Katyl with three assists each. Hazelton went down quickly 4-1 in the first period, and never recovered as BMT won by a score of 10-5. Once again Eric Kowalec led the scoring with 4 goals. Kyle Reid and Danny Ungvarsky both scored two goals each an had four assists. Single goals were scored by Martin Schmidt and Dave Schultz. BMT had 56 shots on goal. if Sneaker Kings sneaks past Metro Sam Brown scored 14 points and Gracjan Kraszewski 12 as Sneaker King (4-8) EDA4=] topped Intermetro (8-4, 2nd seed) 35-33. Ken Regan added 4 points for the winners. Intermetro was led by John McGeehan with 8 points and Frank Buzin with 5 points. [4:0 =10) 65 Baird Stone 37 - Applewood Golf 26 Kevin Domzalski scored 12 points and Shane Gibbons 6 as Baird Stone (10-2) defeated Applewood Golf Course 37-26 to win the regular season championship and the top seed in the playoffs. Applewood (4-8) was led by Tom Mulhern with 10 points and Sean Gilroy with 2. Ann B. Diepietro, D.D.S. 55 - Bonner Chevrolet 35 Erich Mahle scored 26 points and Joe Wyberski 25 as Ann B. Diepietro, D.D.S. (6-6, 5th seed) topped Bonner Chevrolet 55-35. Zach Turchin added 2 points. Bonner (4-8) was led by Matt Daube with 19 points. John Paul Parulski and Jason Demnicki added 6 each. Eastern Penn Supply 37 - Pace Physical Therapy 29 Adam Schoonover scored 19 points, while Phil Miller and Joe Austin added 2 each, as Eastern Penn Supply won it's seventh straight game with a 37-29 vic- tory over Pace Physical Therapy (5-7, 6th seed). Eastern Penn improved to 7-5 and will be the third seed in the playoffs. Gilroy Real Estate 48- Fieldhouse 43 Chris Higdon scored 16 points and Ryan Marascio 12 as Gilroy Real Estate (5-7, 7th seed) defeated the Fieldhouse (7-5, 4th seed) 48-43. Matt Kelly led the Fieldhouse with 16 points, while Andrew Schweitzer and Matt Moser added 4 each. The boys 7th/8th grade playoffs will begin next Sunday. At4 p.m., Gilroy Real Estate will face the 10th seed. At5 p.m., the 8th and 9th seeds will meet. The top six teams will have an opening round bye. Signups Saturday for baseball softball Back Mountain Baseball and Softball will conduct player registration for the 2000 season Saturday, Feb. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Dallas Middle School. All children age 6 and older who have not yet registered and who wish to partici- pate in T-Ball, major and minor league baseball, major and minor league soft- ball, and all teen programs should regis- ter at that time. All prospective players should bring their Social Security num- bers to registration. Any child who has not previously participated in Back Moun- tain Baseball or Softball should bring his or her birth certificate to registration as proof of age. The cost of registration is $35 for the first child in a family, $15 for the second child, and $10 for each addi- tional child. Bmt Baseball will meet Back Mountain Baseball will conduct a general meeting at 8 p.m. on Monday, February 7, at the Dallas American Le- gion. All coaches, umpires, volunteers and board members should attend. Knights top Dallas on the mat, but not by much The battle of the Back Mountain schools proved to be very entertaining as Lake-Lehman defeated Dallas Saturday by 15 points, 38-23. Kelby Morgan (103) and Jon Bird (112) earned the Knights some easy early points with forfeit victories. Aaron Kubasik then won by major decision at 119 pounds for Lake-Lehman. The first Mountaineer victory came at 125 pounds when Joe Siraka earned a major decision win. Perry Coolbaugh (technical fall) and Todd Jones (decision) of Dallas won the next two bouts. Jim Higgins (140) of Lake- Lehman then earned the first pinfall of the evening, and Rich Maciejczak (145) earned a major decision win. The Mountaineers then got two successive victories, Dave Spurlin (pin) and Damian Temperine (decision) at 152 and 160 respectively. The Black Knights got pins then from Rich Hislop (171) and Matt Kehler (275) with Jake Walter (189) of Dallas earning a victory via decision in between the two pins. POST PHOTOS/JIM PHILLIPS SPORTS ROUNDUP BOYS SWIMMING Dallas 100, Hanover Area 72 Matt Schweitzer set another school record, this time in the 100 Freestyle, earning a time of 51.71 seconds while doing the first leg of the 400 Freestyle relay. The Hawkeyes were actually ahead for the first few events until Arie VanKuyk won the diving competition for the Moun- taineers. Schweitzer also won the 100 Backstroke event and finished second in the 50 Freestyle. Joe Stredney won the 100 Fly. Doug Yeager finished first in the 100 Freestyle and third in the 100 Back- stroke. Carl Wilcox took second in both the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle races while Corey Pajka took the same position in both the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke. Bob Murphy and Seth Yeager each earned a second and third place finish individu- ally. Matt Mark took third in the 100 Breakstroke in addition to being on the winning 200 Freestyle Relay team along with Wilcox, VanKuyk, and Pajka. GIRLS SWIMMING Dallas 92, Hanover Area 91 In another exciting swim meet involv- ing the Dallas girls, the Mountaineers were able to pull out a 1-point victory against the Hawkeyes after being off for two days because of the winter storm. The meet was back and forth throughout, as the largest margin during the meet was half a dozen points. Dallas's largest lead was five points and occurred at the conclusion of the diving event in which Erin Cooper won and Colleen Murphy finished second. After a Hanover Area swimmer set a record, the Mountaineers won the remainder of the non-relay events. Shannon Gaffney won the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle events, while Erin Allardyce won the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Breaststroke. Abbie Pisacano and Cherly Kirkwood each took second in one event and third in another. Pisacano finished runnerup in the 500 Freestyle behind Gaffney and third in the 50 Freestyle. Kirkwood was second in the — 100 Fly and third in the 200 Individual Medley. Jen Lewis (100 Freestyle) and Annie Savage (200 Freestyle) added third palce finishes. Dallas 104, Pittston Area 82 The Mountaineers boasted four double winners in knocking off the Patriots Fri- day afternoon.
