All events are free and open to the public. The day will begin with Open- ing Reflections at 9 a.m. in the College Chapel, followed at 10 a.m. with the showing and discussion of the video “A Time for Justice,” held in Walsh Auditorium. At 11:15 a.m. Professor David Payne will conduct a “teach-in” titled “What would King do if he were here at College Misericordia” in Kennedy Lounge, Banks Stu- dent Life Center. At 12:30 p.m. the Metamorphosis Performing Co. will present an interactive theatre performance titled @ @ Strange Like Me” in Walsh Audi- torium. At 1:40 p.m. in Kennedy Lounge, Ron Felton, president of the Wilkes-Barre NAACP, will present King’s “I Have A Dream” speech and will discuss the work of the NAACP. At2:40 p.m. and at 3:30 p.m. the video “Talk About Race” will be shown in Kennedy Lounge. The day’s events will end with another performance of “Strange Like Me” at 6 p.m. in Walsh Audi- torium. Lemmond In acknowledgment of his many contributions to the NEPA region and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania throughout his career, State Senator Charles D. Lemmond, Jr., of Dallas, will be awarded an honorary doctorate at Wilkes University’s Winter Commencement. . Ceremonies will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, at 11:15 a.m. in the Edward Darling, Jr. Theatre of the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing STATE SEN. Arts, corner of CHARLES D. West and ~ LEMMOND JR. South River Sts. Senator Raphael Musto, of Pittston, and Dr. Daniel Klem, Biology professor at Muhlenberg College, will also receive honor- ary degrees. A graduate of Forty Fort High School, Sen. Lemmond earned an A.B. degree from Harvard College and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Pennsyl- vania and Luzerne County Bar Associations. Currently serving his third term in the Pennsylvania Senate, Sen. Lemmond has represented the 20th Senatorial District, which includes all of Pike, Wyoming, Wayne, and Susquehanna Counties, and parts of Luzerne and Monroe Counties, since 1985. Taking the lead on a number of key issues during his tenure in the General Assembly, Sen. Lemmond was the prime sponsor of a law providing judicial access to juvenile crime reports; a major anti-drug law aimed at imposing tougher punishments for repeat drug offenders; a law providing for the housing of state prisoners in federal prisons; and a law providing sentencing procedures for first-degree murder. He also has been instrumen- tal in the passage of new voter registration and election officials compensation laws, sponsoring several other election reform bills and numerous initiatives relating to government ethics, newborn infant hearing screen- ing, charitable organizations, tourist promotion and agricul- ture preservation. Sen. Lemmond is chairman of the Senate State Government Committee, vice chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and a member of the Senate Committees on Finance, Military and Veterans Affairs, and Rules. He also serves on the Joint Legislative Budget and Finance Committee, the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency Board of Directors, and the Joint State Government Commission's Task Force on Decedents’ Estates. He is a member of the Criminal Justice Committee and the reapportion- ment Task Force of the National Conference of State Legisla- tures. Sen. Lemmond is a Past Potentate of [rem Temple and a 33rd degree Mason. He is trustee of the Wyoming Confer- ence of the United Methodist Church, an advisory board member of the Salvation Army, a life-member of the Board of Trustees of Wyoming Seminary, and an advisory board member of Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
