The Chicory House and the Folklore Society start their 10th year of local dancing with a show- case of local talent at a New En- gland Contra Dance on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. The dance is held al St. Therese’s Church, : Pioneer Ave., Shavertown. Music is to be provided by the Warrington fam- ily, with Bob Nicholson calling. No partner or previous experience is necessary, and all dances are taught and called. The five-member Warrington family band features a wonderful combination of American, Celtic and English Country dance tunes. Youngsters lan and Lucy play fiddle, while their brother Ben will add keyboard accompaniment. Mother, Jean, adds rhythm acous- tic guitar, and dad, Peter, will provide bass rhythm. Contra dancing probably be- gan during the 1500's in English villages, but the name contra de- rived from the French “contre” (opposite) to reflect the long line of dancers [acing each other. The dance [form was preserved in New England and carried into the 20th century by Vermont dance caller Ralph Page. Contra dance figures are either choral or couple. Choral figures include moving the long lines simultaneously forward and back, orin groups of four in circles, stars, and heys (a figure eight pattern). The Warrington family band will perform at the Chicory House Jan. 8. square dancing, such as do-si-do, allemandes (turning by the right or left hand), and the balance and swing (a ballroom dance position). Contra dancing is energetic and involves mixing with the other dancers as each couple performs ashortroutine with another couple before progressing onto the next couple and repeating the se- quence. A different routine is taught before each dance by a caller who has everyone “walk through” the dance while explain- ing it. The dancing is moderately aerobic, but all figures can be accomplished with a walking step. Callers encourage dancers to try dancing with a different partner after each dance, and experienced dancers are quick to invite begin- ners into the lines.
