The award is given in recognition of the Banks family commitment to the improvement of College Misericordia and the community. Since the death of her husband Joseph in 1996, Virginia “Ginger” Banks has established a chari- table foundation, the Joseph B. and Virginia H. Banks Founda- tion, which funded the the reno- vation and new construction of the Banks Student Life Center at College Misericordia. Mrs. Banks, her family and their businesses, the Odyssey Fitness Center and Roller King Skating Center, also sponsor numerous fund-raising events for local non- profit organizations, such as the “Jump For Heart” benefit for the American Heart Association of Wyoming Valley. She currently is active in Women Indeed, Inc., non- profit organization she founded which is dedicated to the educa- tion and encouragement of women. In 1988 Mrs. Banks was co- founder with Walter Kelly of Misericordia’s popular Theatre- On-The-Green event, and she and her husband Joseph were active in the Wyoming Seminary Par- ents’ Association and the King’s College Irish Teachers Program. Through her attendance at many Children’s Theatre perfor- mances and her role in establish- ing Theatre-On-The-Green, Mrs. Banks has developed friendships at the College and with the Sisters of Mercy, who founded the Col- lege and sponsor it. She also enjoyed participating in the College's Liturgical celebrations led by Monsignor John Bendik, former College Misericordia cam- pus minister and now pastor of the Churches of St. John the Evan- gelist, St. Casimir and St. Joseph, and a member of the Misericordia Board of Trustees.
