It's about 4 o'clock in the afternoon on a non-descript Tuesday. You've gathered with some pals at your best friend's house to play a little Playstation. Someone has a pack of ciga- rettes they stole from an adult. Everyone takes one. You hesitate and feel like a dweeb. Do you go along, grab a smoke and feel @ cool again? Or do you think about cough- ing up blood, getting cancer, losing your voice, having a stroke and dying? Do you leave the room and live to see your wed- ding day, your daughter's birth, your old age? Thinking big is easy in the abstract. It's more difficult when you're a child and your reputation with “the guys” or “the girls” hinges on your next move. That is why Ken Lyons, a long-time smoker whose voice has been reduced to a raspy whis- er, visited sixth graders at Gate of Heaven Elementary School last week. “I was about nine or ten years old when I first started to smoke,” said Lyons. “I used to take a cigarette out of my father’s pack three or four times a month.” : A habit started innocently enough, a child’s prank, grew into something more serious as Lyons matured. “One night, I was in the ninth grade, I was at a football ene and one of the guys asked if I wanted a cigarette,” he said. “I really ~ Gilded tombs, Cleopatra insp \4 See SMOKING, pg 7 By M.B. That was one of several visits Santa made around the Back Mountain recently. Turn to pages 12-15 for more photos. Amy Ruda and Betsy Pitcher studied Egyptian tombs. “They looked so inter- esting with so many pictures in them. They really showed their life,” Betsy said. Amy was struck by the attention paid to burial sites. “They really made such a big deal about their tombs, much more than we do,” she said. Several students researched Cleopatra. “I wanted to know more about her,” said Britni Gurnari. “I didn’t realize that she was such an important queen of Egypt.” Donna Kaminski and Sheryl Fishel used a 3-foot wooden pole that they painted and decorated with beads and a wig to make it resemble Cleopatra. “We hear about her so much that we wanted to learn more about her,” Sheryl said. “I found out some things I didn’t know ,like how popular she was with the common people. The Egyptians really liked her.” Mike Mully said he choose to do his project about the pharaohs and their pyramids. “We're also learning about them in our history class, so I thought it would be interesting,” he said. noard game with barbie, 6 barbies and 6 boy barbies, and a necklace and a ring and lots of games, and a tiedye shirt and butterfly hairclips, and my own cd’s, and dry erase markers, and I want to ride a dolphin to New York city.
