The Lenoid Meteor shower will cross the path of the SOHO satellite. The satellite will be at risk of being damaged by meteor particles. What can be done to protect this vital piece of high-tech scientific equipment? That was the problem facing actual NASA scien- tists. Those scientists decided to present the dilemma to middle school students through the Endeavor Space forum, which is sponsored by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Education Office. Students from Dallas, Greater Nanticoke Area, Wyoming Valley West, Mid- Valley, Hanover Area, Crestwood and Hazleton Area met at Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18 to prepare and present a persuasive demonstration for solving the problem. The team made up of mem- bers from Dallas and Nanticoke won the competition. The students that represented the Dallas Middle School were Chris Baiamonte, Adam Snider, Jake Kovalchik, Lenore Kaplan and Sara Getz. The teams will continue to work together over the next three years to discuss and solve other NASA problems. The following school lunch menus are for the week of Dec. 16 - 22. The program is intended to bring attention to the hundreds of excellent teachers throughout the area. College Misericordia has been giving these awards for the last 15 years, with the education students nominating the local teachers for the awards. Elizabeth Faerber, elementary teacher at Wycallis Elementary, was a recipient of Excellence in Education Award. Faerber has taught for 31 years and received this award for excellence in teach- ing three years ago. Walkowiak attends Curie Academy Wyoming Seminary student Jaclyn Walkowiak, of Dallas, at- tended the Curie Academy at Cornell this past summer. The highly selective program was de- signed to encourage women to pursue careers in engineering. Admission is based upon student's transcripts, testing, sev- eral required essays, and teacher recommendations. For one week, participants lived in the Cornell dorms and investigated all as- pects of engineering. They were exposed to elements of chemical, structural, mechanical and op- erations research engineering. Lake-Lehman Band places first The Lake-Lehman Band recently attended the “Warrior Invitational” 0 | * at the Wyoming Area High School. | The band took first place in the Group II Division along with the awards for best drum major, best percussion, best woodwinds, best brass and high auxiliary. The band is under the direction of Mr. Edward A. Richards and Mrs. Maureen Richards. Percussion is instructed by Dave Gambal, assisted by Ben McEntee, Mrs. Mandy Gambal instructs the Pit Percussion Colorguard design and instruction is directed by John Taggert.
