Py RJ The Dallas Post Section 2 Wednesday , October 6, 1999 It was a slow and scoreless first ~quarter before the Lake-Lehman Black Knights hit their stride with 27 points in the second period to pull away to a 41-0 win over Hanover Saturday. Josh Kuwaye started things off with a 45-yard TD scamper and Travis McRoy followed with three rushing touchdowns before the half. Rich Patton punched one in in the third, and Greg Woronko put on the finishing touches by taking a 55- yard intereception into the end zone in the last period. Meanwhile, the Lehman defense held the Hawkeyes to 68 yards on the ground and only 36 in the air, recording eight sacks and recovering three fumbles. And they played clean, getting called for only two penalties. McRoy finished the day with 133 years on 17 carries, with Kuwaye next at 64 yards. Quarterback D.J. Kapson was 7-for-15 in the air, with one interception. POST PHOTOS/JIM PHILLIPS McCabe wins SuperKart race at Pocono Jim McCabe, sponsored by Hanover Ornamental Iron Works of Dallas, was able to cross the finish line first when Superkarts USA Northeast Region held its final event in conjunction with The , Race Car Club of America Oct. 3 at Pocono International Raceway. Twenty five of the best shifter kart racers from the north- east were on hand to drive at speeds well over 100 mph. There were more than a dozen lead changes among the front four or five karts, but McCabe was able to take the lead for good with about five laps to go and take the checkered flag by nearly a 10 kartlength advantage. McCabe is also the current World Karting Association Enduro Series national points leader. McCabe will be at Loudon, NH next week- end for their season ending divisional race and at the end of October he will be at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC for the final race of the season in the World Karting Association National Enduro Series. Sports + Knights run wild over Hanover SPORTS ROUNDUP Lehman wins in volleyball Lake-Lehman swept Dallas in volleyball last week, as the Black Knights continued their march to districts. POST PHOTOS/JIM PHILLIPS CROSS COUNTRY Dallas (Boys) 25, G.A.R. 31 Peter Miller finished first with a time of 18:40 at the new Dallas course as the ~ Mountaineers edged the Grenadiers Sept. 29. Jamie Raub, Floyd Mattie, and Matt Mark finsihed consecutively from fourth to sixth as Dallas got some key points there. Lee Griffin and Matt Schweitzer finished in places nine and ten for the Mountaineers. Nanticoke (Boys) 16, Lehman 36 Lake-Lehman earned five of the top 10 spots in a meet Sept. 28, but it wasn’t enough as the Trojans handed the Knights a loss. Brian McMahon was the top Knight finisher at fifth. Curt Mulhern was two seconds behind in sixth. Leh- man then got spots eight through ten in T.J. Dougherty, Drew Salko, and Stan Chmura. Wyo. Area (Boys) 25, Lehman 32 Lake-Lehman was impressive against perennial league power Wyoming Area, but still fell in defeat in a meet Oct. 1. Curtis Mulhern ran the best time for Lehman at 19:10, good enough for third place. T.J. Dougherty was five seconds behind in fourth place. Drew Salko and Brian McMahon placed sixth and sev- enth respectively. GOLF Pre-districts Lake-Lehman’s Dom Castrignano was one of two players to earn medalist hon- ors in the Wyoming Valley Conference pre-district event Sept. 28 at Mountain Laurel Golf Club in White Haven. The Black Knights got very strong finishes from other golfers as well. After Castrignano set the low at 71, Lake- Lehman's Gary Sagan finished fourth with a round of 75. Freshman Dusty’ Kapson finished ninth with a score of 78. Matt Loftus scored an 81 to also earn a spot in the district tournament. Dallas’s Mike Ruggere (83) and Jeff Zaruta (84) qualified for districts = well. Hanover 163, Dallas 164 Kevin Piekara was medalist with a 38 at Wyoming Valley Country Club, and Mike Ruggere was next with a 40, but Hanover’s consistency won by a stroke. The Hawkeye golfers shot a 40 and three 41s to take the win. Lehman 154, Seminary 155 Lake-Lehman knocked off the Blue Knights of Wyoming Seminary in a very competitive match played Sept. 29 at Huntsville Golf Club. Lehman got very steady scores from Gary Sagan (36), Dom Castrignano (37), Matt Loftus (39), and Josh Baranoski (42) to edge rival Semi- nary by a single stroke. Lehman 151, Meyers 174 The Knights easily handled the Mohawks in a match played at Wyoming Valley Country Club Oct. 1. Gary Sagan and Matt Loftus earned co-medalist hon- ors with rounds of 36. Teammate Dom Castrignano was right behind with a score of 37. Dustin Kapson finished fourth for Lehman, shooting a 42. Dallas 171, Coughlin 183 Matt Hoover earned medalist honors as Dallas had possibly its most impres- sive showing of the season when it de- feated Coughlin last week. Jeff Zaruta added a 44, while Kevin Piekara and Mike Ruggere each recorded scores of 45. The match was played at Irem Temple Coun- try Club. Dallas 168, Hazleton Area 169 The Mountaineers were outstanding for the second straight match as five Dallas golfers finished within three strokes of each other, enabling the Mounts to score an upset win against Hazleton. Kevin Piekara and Mike Ruggere each shot a 41 to lead Dallas. Kyle Tomek was right behind the pair with a 42. Seniors Jeff Zaruta and Matt Hoover each added rounds of 44. VOLLEYBALL Lehman 2, Dallas 0 Lake-Lehman won the battle of the Back Mountain schools in a two-game decision played at Dallas last week. Sa- rah Davis had a huge day on the court for the Knights, as she had six assists, nine service points, and three aces. Jennifer Frank added four kills and four points.
